DAF YOMI - WHO CAME UP WITH THE IDEA? Since Harav Meir Shapiro's Zt"l  introduction of the Daf Yomi at the Knessia Gedolah (August 1923) many claims have been made that the original idea came from various other Gedolim.   None of those claims can be substantiated, all are hearsay. However, an article appeared in a Zeirei Agudah journal (Digleinu) on December 1920 a couple of years before the Knessia Gedolah (August 1923) a Rav by the name of R Moishe Menachem Mendel Spivak (HYD.)wrote an article proposing the exact same concept of Daf Yomi as proposed years later by R.M.Shapiro.

Parshas Shemini-What Makes A Person Happy

                                               Why was she the happiest person in the world?

The מדרש תנחומא (Parshas Shmini) says," We wouldn't find any man or woman as happy as אלישבע בת עמינדב. Her husband אהרן was the כהן גדול and a נביא. Her brother-in-law משה was מלך and a נביא. Her sons were סגני כהונה. 

Her brother נחשן was the head of all the נשיאים. (The מדרש רבה adds, her grandson פנחס, was the משיח מלחמה)

This lasted only until she lost her two sons. (נדב ואביהו)

Therefore the פסוק in 'תהלים ע"ה ה says "אמרתי להוללים אל תהלו" and Shlomo in 'קהלת ב' ב said "לשחוק אמרתי מהולל"

It seems from this מדרש, that being related to and surrounded by great people makes a person happy.

The Gemoro Rosh Hashana 11a says:  חדש זיו is the month of אייר.  The reason it is called זיו is that the אבות were  born in ניסן.  By the time the month of זיו (Iyar)  arrived all the אבות were already born. (see Rashi)  The רמ"א(E.H. 126:6 )writes: “Since there is a   מחלוקת how to spell  אייר   (if 1 or 2 Yuds) therefore we try to refrain from writing גיטין, the entire month.” ר' עקיבא איגר quotes  the ילקוט with the ראשי תיבות of אברהם, יצחק ,יעקב ,רחל and they are the סוד המרכבה (From the ילקוט we see that the spelling of אייר is with 2 Yuds.) A possible explanation on the סוד המרכבה The אלשיך in Parshas ויחי writes:  " The מרכבה requires to have all three אבות both  אברהם יצחק & יעקב (two yuds) Hence, this explains why the ראשי תיבות of אייר is the סוד המרכבה  אמבצי

The Zohar Of The Week -Parshas Achrei Mos

The Zohar (Parshas Achrai Mos Daf 58a)  writes:

 זמנין אית בשתא דרעווא אשתכך " 

 "וזמנין אית בשתא דדינא אשתכך

There are times in the year when עת רצון is to be found.

Reb Chaim Vital in the Hagohos writes:

The times of עת רצון are to be found in the months of אדר,ניסן,אייר,סיון

Zealots -Parshas Pinchas

פרשת השבוע ויהי אחרי המגפה                                בקנאו את קנאתי When immorality was involved, both פנחס & לוי, risked their lives by being קנאים, (zealots) yet פנחס was praised for his קנאות  and לוי, on the other hand, was ostracized for his קנאות The Netziv in שו"ת משיב דבר explains, that practicing קנאות should not be done even by חסידים who are doing it for the sake and love of Hashem. It may only  be done by תלמידי חכמים using their הגיון תורה (Torah logic- Hashkafah)  (לוי was a 13-year-old boy when they killed the people of שכם)   אמבצי They are the only ones who know and understand the very minute and precise details as to when to be מקדש שם שמים by going out to fight for the cause and when to refrain from קנאות to avoid 'חילול ה. Perhaps, according to the Netziv, when in the future, there will be a need to be מקדש שם שמים by bringing traffic to a halt and the Egged buses to a standstill, etc. instead of 14-year-old Bachurim we should have the זקני ראשי ישיבה  who sit down on the pavement in the middle of the street and scream "Natzim" at the Zionist police who are trying to Shmad and torture all the Frum Yidden.

The Dikduk Matzav

 The Chavas Yair #124 writes:

 “Learning  Chochmas Hadikduk

is important and necessary only, for the basics.( , נכח-נסתר  ,זכר-נקיבה
, עבר-עתיד,יחיד-רבים,etc.)
Wasting days learning various different בינינים is not important”.
The Tashbatz 1:33 writes ,” Not knowing Dikduk doesn’t reduce
the Ma’alos of a Talmid Chacham”.

In Shu”t Ha’Rema (5-6-7) there are exchanges of letters from  the Maharshal who criticizes the Rema for writing Teshuvos with Dikduk  mistakes." כי כתביו הם חומה פרוצה לרוב בנוכח ונסתר" 

The Rema admits to him that his writing is not fluent. He says that he is careful to make his point clear and understood, and that is more important than proper grammar. Only a Sefer Torah, needs to be exact with the wording.

 The Rema continues , he is not trying
to brag about it but he never learned Dikduk in his life.

It seems, the lack of Dikduk study goes back, way before the Maskilim reintroduced it.

Why do we Bentch?

Is it to thank Hashem for the pleasure of:

1) eating

2) full stomach

3) both eating & full

 

R.Akivah Eiger ( 'הגהות רע"א או"ח רפ"ו: ב ) asks a

חקירה:

 What creates  the חיוב  of Bentching, is it both the אכילה & שביעה (eating & being full) or maybe only the שביעה creates  the חיוב and not the אכילה

It would make a difference if,



1) A קטן who became A גדול within 72 minutes (כדי עיכול)
(time it takes for food to digest) of eating a meal that he
has Bentched as a קטן. Is he obligated to Bentch again?
The אכילה  was done as a קטן and the שביעה as a גדול

2) A Goy who ate and became a גר
within 72 minutes of his meal, Is he obligated
to Bentch for eating when he was a Goy?


3) According to the שיטות that women are פטור
from Birkat Hamazon An עבד כנעני (same as women)
who ate and his master freed him within 72 minutes
of his meal is he obligated to Bentch?

4) An אונן who ate and they buried the Niftar
within 72 minutes of his meal, Is he obligated
to Bentch?

5) A קטן ate before his Bar Mitzvah and wasn't full
he became Bar Mitzvah within 72 minutes and
ate a small amount (פחות מכשיעור שביעה) which filled
him up. Is he obligated to Bentch again even though
he ate less than a Shiur since he is full.?

       All three  weekday שמונה עשרה in the entire month of Nissan are different than most weekday שמונה עשרה of the year.  ?

The Parsha Matzav -PARSHAS TETZAVE

Parshas Hashavua ויקחו אליך שמן זית    The Midrash Rabbah (תצוה ל"ו) says that  "the same way as oil will always float on top of all משקין (liquids) in the world so too the בני ישראל when they do the will of Hashem they will always be on top of all the nations". The מחצית השקל ס' ער"ב quotes from the ספר ידי משה who quotes from a גדול אחד that liquor (alcohol) is not considered משקין.  His proof is from this Midrash that oil will always float on top of all משקין  Oil will mix with alcohol and doesn't float on top of alcohol. Therefore we must assume that alcohol is not a liquid (משקין) If this were to be true, then you would not be allowed to make Kiddush on liquor (perhaps no  ברכה ראשונה as well) since Kiddush has to be made on wine/חמר מדינה -  liquid or food (משקין או פת) However, since we have a כלל (rule) of אין למדין הלכה מפי אגדה We can not learn Halacha from Agadah. Therefore, this won't be a reason to create a problem of making Kiddush on liquor.

When they drink a lechayim they wish each other Yehi Ratzon that our Tzadik should reveal himself Ba'agala Uvizman Karev- Bimheira Veyameinu

a) The מ"ב  תקס"ז סק"ו  quotes the חיי אדם

"when cooking for a Seudas Mitzvah one may

taste the food on a Ta'anis" (may not swallow)

b) The ברכי יוסף תקס"ח 8) brings a Machlokes

If someone mistakenly made a Bracha (on food) 

on a Ta'anis 

According to the נחפה בכסף, he should eat less

than a כזית 

Others argue and hold to say בשכמל"ו after making

the Bracha.

The Kol Bo writes There are places where they don't place the ashes on the Choson's

head, because there are some Chasanim who don't wear Tefilin (פאר תחת אפר) ---

instead,  a כוס is broken after the שבע ברכות  to mourn the Churban Habayis.

This Kol Bo is the first source for breaking a כוס under the Chupa to mourn the Churban Habayis.

The Minhag today, is that the mothers of Chosson Kallah are the ones who break the plate at the תנאים 

Perhaps the reason for this is because the תנאים originally was done at home. The woman of 

the house brought the plate from the kitchen. Since it was in her hands she was the one
