DAF YOMI - WHO CAME UP WITH THE IDEA? Since Harav Meir Shapiro's Zt"l  introduction of the Daf Yomi at the Knessia Gedolah (August 1923) many claims have been made that the original idea came from various other Gedolim.   None of those claims can be substantiated, all are hearsay. However, an article appeared in a Zeirei Agudah journal (Digleinu) on December 1920 a couple of years before the Knessia Gedolah (August 1923) a Rav by the name of R Moishe Menachem Mendel Spivak (HYD.)wrote an article proposing the exact same concept of Daf Yomi as proposed years later by R.M.Shapiro.

DAF HASHAVUA 'עירובין ב  WORDS ALONE CAN CHANGE A סוכה פסולה INTO A סוכה כשירה (2 examples) A 2 walled סוכה built in a מבוי one may consider the לחי  of the מבוי as a Mechitza  (3d wall) for theסוכה  on Shabbos Sukkos only. The reason is because of מיגו . Since it is considered a Mechitza for Shabbos it is also considered  a Mechitza for the סוכה. This 2 walled סוכה is kosher only on Shabbos and not in the weekdays. Someone being מקבל שבת early and doing so by saying מזמור שיר ליום השבת changes a non-kosher סוכה into a kosher one. O.Ch. 630 : 7   A סוכה, higher than 20 אמות is פסול. If you place straw etc. on the floor of the סוכה and thereby reducing the height, it is kosher, only if you are מבטל בפה the straw to the floor. You must verbalize & say, that you plan to keep the straw there O. Ch. 633 – 4

The Chasam Sofers Pesicha Drasha For Nezikin

The Yeshiva in Pressburg at the times of the Chasam Sofer started learning Meseches Bava Kama on Lag Baomer. 

The Chasam Sofer  gave a פתיחה in the Yeshiva and this is one of the things he said:

מסכת נזיקין has 3 בבות (gates) and each בבא consists of  10 פרקים a total of 30

The Chasam Sofer related it to the Pasuk in Tehillim (119:18) 

גל עיני ואביטה נפלאות מתורתך

"Unveil my eyes so that I may perceive the wonders of your Torah"

The רמז of 3+30  "גל" are for the 3 בבות and 30 פרקים."

It is interesting that the Chasam Sofer didn't mention the רמז all the Chasidishe Seforim write, that "גל" refers to ל"ג בעומר

Perhaps we can use Chasam Sofer's רמז of גל עיני on the first משנה in מסכת סנהדרין which enumerates all Dinim that require

a Bais Din of 3 or more. The Mishna enumerates 30 such cases.אמבצי

The Kol Bo writes There are places where they don't place the ashes on the Choson's

head, because there are some Chasanim who don't wear Tefilin (פאר תחת אפר) ---

instead,  a כוס is broken after the שבע ברכות  to mourn the Churban Habayis.

This Kol Bo is the first source for breaking a כוס under the Chupa to mourn the Churban Habayis.

The Gemoro in Brachos where מר בריה דרבינא & רב אשי who at their son's weddings broke

expensive cups was not because of the Churban but to minimize excessive joy in Olam Hazeh. (ר' יונה)

The Minhag today, is that the mothers of Chosson Kallah are the ones who break the plate at the תנאים 

Perhaps the reason for this is because the תנאים originally was done at home. The woman of 

the house brought the plate from the kitchen. Since it was in her hands she was the one
