Reb Moishe Feinsteins Vort On Parshas Bechokoisai

One year an older man came to speak in the shul I daven in

He said shortly after the war he saw a sign that Reb Moishe was speaking in  a shul on the Lower East Side Of New York.

The purpose of the speech was to give chizuk to holocaust survivors who recently immigrated to New York.

Reb Moishe Feinstein asked: 

Why is the Parsha of Eiruchin right after the Toichocho? What does Eiruchin have to do with the Toichocho.

Reb Moishe Zatzal Answered:

"Oib Mir Vill Shatzen Op A Yid Darf Min zen vu er halt noch er geit durch a toichecho"

Parshas Vayeiro - Amazing Story From Reb Moishe Feinstein

HORAYOS 10b-11a

מנין שאין הקב"ה מקפח אפילו שכר שיחה נאה שאילו בכירה דקרייה מואב וכו' 

Lot's firstborn daughter named her child מואב thus recalling she bore him from her father.

Lot's second daughter named her child בן עמי which do not explicitly recall the child was from her father. For being more discreet than her older sister, she was rewarded.

In the Hakdama to the Igros Moshe (O.Ch.8 ) there is a very interesting story supposedly told by R. Moshe zt"l:

R. Moshe went to be מבקר חולה in Luban a sick person whose tongue had swelled up.

He told R.Moshe the reason why he contacted this disease.

He said he had a קושי'

 " משיח How is it, that the 

will be an offspring of these women who were not even ashamed to  name their children and publicize having relations with their  

own father

One day he had a dream

Two elderly women came to him and claimed to be the daughters of Lot. They told him they heard his complaint and wanted to respond.

They said they could have easily claimed that the children were born by an  immaculate conception and invent a new religion

.

They intentionally named them עמון ומואב

​ ​

(embarrassing themselves) to publicize

​ ​

that there is no such thing as an immaculate conception.

For this reason they were  rewarded that the true

משיח will come from them.

They also told him that he was being punished

​ ​

for speaking badly about them.

​ ​

After he finished telling the story to R.Moshe

he turned to the other side and died.

Zogt Ah Niggun

In many  Botei Medrashim/Yeshivos, some of the Nigunim during Hakafos are  Yiddish Nigunim (Gits Arein, Olam Habo etc.)

Reb Iser Zalman  Meltzer Zt"l used to sing during the Hakafos the song “Kometz Alef Oh Kometz Bais Boh- and  the song

“Omar Abaya”. R.Isser Zalmen said these were the Nigunim

they sang in Volozhin Yeshiva during the Hakafos.

In some Ashkenaz Shuls, they are Makpid not to sing any 

songs with Pesukim . They sing only the Piyutim printed

in the Machzor and Nigunim without words.

It is very likely , that in the olden days they would not sing Pesukim and therefore sang only Yiddish Nigunim etc.

Many are not aware there is an Issur to sing Pesukim.

They are also not aware that the Poskim  tried desperately

to justify why almost everybody sings Pesukim and are not

concerned with the Gemoro – התורה חוגרת שק- עשאוני

בניך כמין זמר .

Reb Moishe Feinstein writes (Igros Moshe Y.D.2: 142) He doesn’t know of a good reason to justify it.

R. Chaim Kanyevsky Shlita holds one may only sing Pesukim

If the intention is to praise Hashem. Singing Pesukim for Simcha is forbidden even for  Choson/Kallah.

Reb Elyashuv zt”l is Matir if one's intention is to pronounce with the Nigun the meaning of the words ,for instance, מה אהבתי תורתך then one is allowed to sing.(The music should match the words and help in the Kavana). 

There is also a problem singing the Piyut of האדרת והאמונה on

Simchas Torah.

The Mogen Avraham writes (O.Ch. 565) one may not say this

Piyut ברבים except for once a year on Yom Kippur.

Could be that by adding the Yiddish words צוא וועמען צוא וועמען 

might solve the problem.אמבצי

The Made Up Story Of Reb Moshe Feinstein -Daf Hashovua

Someone told Reb Elyashiv that at one point the doctors wanted to give Reb Moshe Feinstein a pace maker. Reb Moshe refused because he said that when Moshiach comes I want to sit on the Sanhedrin . If I have a pace maker then I will be a baal Muum and wont be able to sit on the Sanhedrin .

Reb Elyashiv said this story can’t be true .

וימת נדב ואביהוא (במדבר ג:ד)

בנות צלפחד מנאן הכתוב דרך גדולתן (ב"ב קכ ע"א)

The רשב"ם explains that when the Torah is referring to their marriage then it lists them in the order of their age because the norm is for the older one to marry before the younger one (and that's how it actually happened).

Some Poskim say that this rule of not marrying off a younger sibling before an older one applies only to females.

Males who have the Mitzvah of פרו ורבו there is no reason of holding back the Mitzvah because of an older brother who is not married yet.(  אג"מ-מהרש"ם)

Some want to prove this from נדב ואביהוא. Chazal tell us one of the reasons they were both punished was for staying 

single and not getting married. If אביהוא would have had to wait for his older brother נדב to get married then why 

was he punished.

This is not really a proof because if the older brother refuses to get married then there is nothing to wait for and there is

an obligation for the younger brother to get married.  Once נדב refused to get married then אביהוא was obligated 

to get married and yet he didn't, therefore, he too was punished.

The ש"ך (Y.D. 244:13) quotes the ב"ח " Both, brothers or sisters should not marry the younger one before 

the older one".

R.Moishe Feinstein zt"l (Igros M. E.H.2:1) says that the ב"ח is only applicable if both are engaged only then must 

we marry off the older before the younger.

A younger sibling (even sister) may get engaged before the older sibling and get married if the older is not engaged yet.

The   (מהרש"ם (ח"ג קל"ו  says that this Halacha is not a דין גמור but a Minhag Derech Eretz. Therefore in certain

cases ("בעושה משום דחק") it is permitted.

Reb Moishe By A Chalitza

Before the Chalitza shoe is put on

the Yavam, they wash his foot and dry it.

This is done so to make sure there is no 

Chatziza between the foot and the shoe

Mori V’rabi Harav Hagaon R.S.Miller Shlita 

said, he had attended a Chalitza where 

R.Moishe Feinstein zt”l. was the Mesader.

It was a fascinating scene to watch  

R. Moishe the Poisek Hador bent over with 

a washcloth and a bowl of water

washing & drying the foot of the Yavam.

Tach Vtat memorial day

In 1171, 31 Yidden were burned in the city of Blois France.

Rabeinu Tam was Gozer Ta'anis on כ' סיון 

He said: 

​ ​

" this Ta'anis is greater than Tzom Gedalya being it is like Yom Kippur."

After the גזרת ת"ח ות"ט  (C​hmelnytsky ym"s 1648-9) The Va'ad Arba Artzos reintroduced the Ta'anis of chof sivan

In 1946 The Gedolim in Hungary picked chof sivan as the day to commemorate the Holocaust by fasting and  Slichos. 

A special Selichos for כ' סיון was printed in Budapest.

In Eretz Yisroel Harav Chizkiyahu Mishkovsky zt"l along with other Gedolim tried during the war when  the terrible information started to become public  to 

establish  a whole week of  Aveilus (Shiva)  and a single  day of Taanis. 

The Chazon Ish and Brisker Rov zt"l both opposed the idea

They held in our generation we are not big enough to declare a new fast day for Klall Yisroel.

As a result the Hungarian initiative gradually fell apart.  

Reb Moishe Feinstein zt"l (Igros Moshe Y.D.4:57) explains

that the Gezeiras Hitler ym"s was about  to destroy the  whole 

Jewish nation in the whole world.

This Gezeira is part of the original  Gezeiras Galus   which

Chazal had already established the fast days . We

are not big enough to add more to Takonas Chazal.

Whereas the Gezeiras תתנ"א  & ת"ח ות"ט etc. were local

Gezeiros. In such cases we may  be Gozer Ta'anis. 

The same way if an individual goes

through ח"ו a צרה ל"ע may fast so too a Kehila may

establish a fast. 

Did You Know ? (68)

According  to both Reb Moishe  Feinstien & R.Y.S. Elyashuv zt"l :

If someone Davens in a Chasidishe Shul where Tachanun is not said on a Yahrzeit of a Tzadik. If he hasn't managed to convince them that it is against the Halacha, then he should say Tachanun on his own.There is no problem of לא תתגודדו or  יוהרא  (haughtiness)

Should One Stand During The Reading Of Aseres Hadibros

1) The Shu"t Harambam # 46 says not to stand up when the Aseres Hadibros
are read.(Ta'arumos Haminim)

2) The Yavetz ,Chida etc. bring the Minhag of standing up for the Aseres
Hadibros.

3) The Igros Moshe (O.Ch. 4 - 22) says even if your Minhag is to remain seated and you are in a Shul where they stand up, you must stand up. (Minhag Hamakom)

4) Reb Yosef Shalom Elyashuv (Shiurei Brachos 12a) Even when in a Shul where
they all stand, you should not stand up (if you are sitting). because, standing up for the Aseres Hadibros is Neged (against ) Halacha.
