EVERYBODY (almost) HAS IT WRONG

Everybody(almost) has it wrong

There are hundreds of words we pronounce
incorrectly in Davening, learning, etc.

a few examples:

דור הפלגה
It is not Dor Haflogah but Dor Hapalegah

Haflagah = distance . וסת הפלגה, The
time (distance) between the 1st and 2nd וסת
A boat leaving shore (distancing) מפליג בספינה
Hapalegah = dividing, breaking up, halving

פכים קטנים-
small jugs (plural) The correct pronunciation is
Pakim (with a kaf) not Pachim (with a chaf)
unlike פחים with a ח (Ches) (cans - tin)

מסכת יומא
There is no such word as Yooma.
The correct pronunciation is Yoma.

 משנה ברורה
The correct pronunciation is Mishna Verurah
and not Berurah the same as שפה ברורה is
not pronounced Berurah but Verurah.

אלו-ה
Many people pronounce it incorrectly. In נשמת,ELOHA Kol Beriyos,
in הלל,Milifnei ELOHA Yaakov or. in על חטא, ELOHA Selichos

The correct pronunciation is ELOAH ( last syllable Ah
not Ha )

Harav Hagaon R. Moishe Feinstein zt"l* defends
the masses who mispronounce words in קריאת שמע.
R. Moishe claims that a corrupt language that is spoken
by many turns into a language of its own. It's not לשון הקדש
but תפילה וקריאת שמע may be done in any language.

Lesson In Alef Bais/ Dikduk -PARSHAS NOACH

Noach has a Patach under the Ches, yet we don't pronounce it Nocha.
The reason for it ,
because a Ches at the end of a word that has a patach under it is called. a patach genuva.
To pronounce a patach genuva you add a last syllable " ah" (or sefardim "wah")
Hence, Noach Koach Tapuach etc.
The same rule (Patach Genuvah) applies to a word that ends with a Hei and has a dogesh (dot)
Many people pronounce incorrectly. in Hallel ,Milifnei ELOHA Yaakov or. in Al Cheit, ELOHA Selichos

The correct pronounciation is ELOAH (Ah
not Ha )

BMG SHOULD CHANGE THEIR STATIONARY
My nephew R. P. Perl Shlita was meorer that Beth Medrash GovoHA. is misspelled *.
Proper spelling would be GovoAH .

Govoah for Zochor is spelled gimmel veis VOV  HEI (Patach Genuva - AH )
Gevoha for Nekeivah is spelled gimmel veis HEI HEI (Reg Patach under first Hei - HA )

Sukkah (nekeiva) shehi Gevoha (2 Heis reg Patach)
Bais Midrash (zochor) Govoah (Patach Genuvah)

* only english spelling is incorrect - hebrew spelling is correct  gimmel veis vov hei (Patach Genuva)

Parshas Vayakhel-Can People Make Mistakes?????

Mori V'Rabi Hagaon Reb Shlomo Miller Shlita told us:

"The Velt has two misconseptions on Gedolim

1) A Godol can't make mistakes.

2) If they make a mistake they are not a Godol anymore.

Both statements are untrue."

In this week’s  Parsha  (Vayakhel) one of the Gedolei   Hameforshim, made a mistake with the translation of the Vav of  Veosoh Betzalel. (Shmos 36 – 1)

The arrangement of the Tenach into Kapitlach (chapters)

was done by the Christian church in the 12th century .

There is no uniform system, where a new chapter begins or ends.

At the end of chapter Shmos 35 it says how Moshe spoke to

the Bnei Yisroel about Betzalel’s  Chachma that Hashem gave him, to do the Meleches Hamishkan.

A new chapter begins at Shmos 36 – 1 “ V’osoh Betzalel – Kol Meleches Avodas Hakodesh”.

Because a new chapter begins here, one of the Gedolei  Hameforshim, mistakenly translated And  Betzalel made (past tense) – (vav hachibur)

The Targum Onkeles  was also changed  from V’yabeid

(He shall do) to Vavad (He did). The Ibn Ezrah (36 -1) and Rashi in Ms.Makos 12a both say , V’osoh is a command
( future)  And Betzalel shall make etc.  V’osoh is a continuation from the previous chapter.(mehapech + chibur)

In the name of the M’hril Diskin it is said “When you are

Ma’avir Sidrah you should say in the Targum V’yabeid and not the way it is printed in the Chumashim* “ Vavad” otherwise you won’t be  yotzei Shnayim Mikrah.

*The new Oz Vehodor Chumashim corrected the
Targum to V'Yabeid.

DO YOU KNOW THE מה נשתנה ?

DO YOU KNOW THE מה נשתנה ?
incorrect translation:
מה נשתנה - why is it different.

correct translation:
מה נשתנה -how different it is.

מה = what - how
למה - מדוע = why

The Dikduk Matzav

                                לז"נ ר' יחיאל בן הרב אליעזר ע"ה
יום השנה- ט"ו אלול

 No Dikduk

 The Chavas Yair #124 writes:
 “Learning  Chochmas Hadikduk
is important and necessary only, for the basics.( , נכח-נסתר  ,זכר-נקיבה
, עבר-עתיד,יחיד-רבים,etc.)
Wasting days learning various different בינינים is not important”.
The Tashbatz 1:33 writes ,” Not knowing Dikduk doesn’t reduce
the Ma’alos of a Talmid Chacham”.

In Shu”t Ha’Rema (5-6-7) there are exchanges of letters from  the Maharshal who criticizes the Rema for writing Teshuvos with Dikduk  mistakes." כי כתביו הם חומה פרוצה לרוב בנוכח ונסתר"

The Rema admits to him that his writing is not fluent. He says that he is careful to make his point clear and understood, and that is more important than proper grammar. Only a Sefer Torah, needs to be exact with the wording.

The Rema continues , he is not trying
to brag about it but he never learned Dikduk in his life.

It seems, the lack of Dikduk study goes back, way before the Maskilim reintroduced it.

Boneh or Bonai

ובני ירושלים עיר הקדש במהרה בימינו

At the end of the Bracha  Rachaim/Uvnai Yerushalayim,
the proper way to say it is Bonai(Tzerei) Yerushalayim
or Boneh (Segol & not Tzeirei) Verachamov Yerushalayim.

If Verachamov is added then it is Boneh not Bonai.*

The אמן at the end is not part of the Bracha, therefore
one should pause between Yerushalayim and Amen.

אין דבר

אין דבר

R. (Shlomo) Zalmen Hena  (רז"ה)  was one of the greatest Balei Dikduk. The Pri Megadim calls him “Harav Hamedakdek  Hagadol” (O. Ch. 56)

It is said that the Vilna Gaon acquired his knowledge in dikduk from the seforim of the Rezah.

In the year 1725, the Rezah printed his Siddur “Bais Tefilah” with his pirush “Sha’arei Tefillah”. The Siddur has a Haskamah from the Chacham Zvi and other Gedolim.

Wherever the dikduk was incorrect, he changed the nusach.  He also changed from leshon Chachamim (KLUM) to leshon Torah (DOVOR) .

Most of the changes in the Bal Hatanya’s Siddur supposedly are based on the Rezah’s  Siddur “Bais Hatefilah” .

The Shu”t  Minchas Yitzchok (10 – 16) criticizes the  Siddurim printers for changing
the nusach from Klum to Dovor.

The Rezah was probably the first person to tamper with the nusach hatefilah. He held that dikduk overrides the nusach established by the anshei knesses hagedola.

The Yavetz (R. Yakov Emden ) criticized him strongly. He published a sefer (לוח ארש) whose sole purpose was to point out the mistakes and argue on the Rezah . In his Hakdama he writes

“It is unbelievable what he (Rezah) did. He destroyed and broke fences, moved into

territory that doesn’t belong to him and there he destroyed and built without permission.
He made changes whenever he felt like it. He had the העזה (chutzpa) to tamper with the nusach of the Anshei Knesses Hagedola”.

The Yavetz also claimed that the haskama from his father, the Chacham Zvi was forged, in order to make for himself a great name (Rezah) .

R. Dovid Yitzchaki claimed that all the other Haskamos were also forged.

R. Mordechai Duseldorff wrote a Kunteres (Kunteres Hahasogos) with 192 proofs against the
Rezah. The Kunteres has a Haskama from the Noda B’yehuda .

After the Rezah another maskil and medakdek , Itzik Stanov appeared and followed the Rezah. He too changed the nusach according to dikduk and from
leshon chazal to leshon Tanach. (Leisheiv Basukah to Losheves Basukah) etc.

This trend continued.

In some Chasidic courts, they added and subtracted
from the original nusach of the Anshei Knesses Hagedola.
Gradually, even in the non Chasidic siddurim, many changes crept in from the Rezah and Itzik Stanov.

Untill 300 years ago, every siddur , "Yisgadal Veyiskadash" was pronounced with a patach.

Rezah changed it to Yisgadeil Veyiskadeish with a tzeirei.
The Mishna Verura quotes the Pri Megodim who quotes the Rezah to say it
with a tzeirei.
Hence, in most  Litvishe Yeshivos they pronounce it with a tzeirei.

Some claim, that the first to introduce Mashiv Haruach Umorid HAGOSHEM
with a קמץ was Itzik Stanov. Until then everybody said HAGESHEM with a סגול.
It is hard to believe and to accept that some parts in our Nusach Hatefillah has
changes in them which were done by Maskilim.

3M - Misspelled, Mistranslated or Mispronounced?

3M - Misspelled, Mistranslated or Mispronounced?

Those learning Gemoro, especially Daf Yomi who for the past year have been learning the three בבות  in Nezikin are familiar with the words זבין  (with a Yud) and זבן (without the Yud).   זבין means sold and זבן means bought.

Therefore חד גדיא דזבין אבא should be translated, my father sold, or change the spelling to דזבן.

Mori V'Rabi Harav Hagaon R. Shlomo Miller Shlita said, there is a third possibility to keep the spelling with a Yud but change the pronunciation to DEZVIN instead of DEZABIN.

The translation will change to " One kid the "purchase" of my father.

Please don't pray to destroy our city ח"ו

Don't Daven ח"ו for the destruction of Yerushalayim.

According to the  (מנחת שי (תהלים פו:ב, (and others)

In the Tefillah of אתה יצרת*  at  " ולפי שחטאנו -- חרבה עירנו "
You should make sure to pronounce the Reish of
Chorevo with a שוא נע (Chorevo).

By pronouncing the Reish with a  שוא נח (silent)
(Chorvo) the translation changes to "Because we sinned --
you should (ח"ו ) destroy our city". (imperative)

The actual translation is, "Because we sinned our city was
destroyed (past tense). ובני ירושלים עיר הקדש במהרה בימינו

According to Harav Hagaon R.Chaim Kanyevsky Shlita:

Females should say Moidoh Ani Lefonecha .
(Kometz under Dalet) and not Modeh Ani

Many others agree

Artscroll Siddur for women (Ohel Sarah) it says Modeh

The Chavas Yair On Dikduk

                                                                                                                                                                                                                    לז"נ הבחור הקדוש

The Chavas Yair #124 writes :

Why The Rebbe Was Wrong At The Chumash Party

SEE HERE POST ABOUT CHUMASH PARTY

A Vav at the beginning of a word can serve as three functions
1) Vav Hachibur ,connecting  to the previous word or sentence (and)
2 ) Vav Hamehapech , reverse future to past or past to future.
3)  Vav Hachibur + Hamehapech , both functions.( 1+2)
                                      Examples
1) Moshe V’aharon                         _          Moshe and Aharon                                               [Chibur]

2) Yikrah = he will call (future)        –        Vayikrah = he called (past)                                  [Mehapech]

2) Osoh = he made (past)                _        Veosoh = he shall make (future)                         [Mehapech]

3) Yomar  = he will say (future)       --       Vayomar = a) he said (past)  – b) and he said (past+ and)     [Mehapech +Chibur ]

Vayikrah is a new Parsha and Chumash. The Vav can’t be a Chibur it has no connection to the previous Parsha. The Vav can act only as a Mehapech.

Therefore the correct translation is He called , not And he called.

*IMPORTANT!!!* Don't forget to make Kiddush on Yom Kippur

Making Kiddush on Yom Kippur is a מחלוקת between ר' עקיבא איגר   who holds it is only a  מצוה דרבנן  unless it falls on...
