The Chida describes his travels* to Tunis. He celebrated the Seder at the Rosh Hakohol-R.Yehoshua Hakohen Tanuji.Rachamim. The servant  raised the Seder plate and surrounded it three times over the heads of all the men. Rachamim wasn’t sure how many times to do it for the women. The Chida told him there is a Pasuk in Shoftim (5:30)   רחם רחמתים לראש גבר Rachem = 1 Rachmosaim =2 : 2+1 = 3 times, only L’rosh Gever -over the head of a man and not for a woman. The original Minhag is brought down in th Bais Yosef(O.Ch. 473) in the name of Reb  Yeruchem.” The Minhag is to raise the basket over the heads of the childrenAnd to say    לפיכך אנחנו חייבים –

אליהו הנביא

IS HE COMING TO THE SEDER?

Many believe,  that אליהו הנביא appears at every Seder table on Pesach Night. Some think, we open the door at שפוך חמתך so אליהו הנביא can enter to drink from the כוס that was prepared specifically for him.

THE TRUTH:

כוס של אליהו is not mentioned  in Shulchan Aruch etc. The first to mention כוס של אליהו, is the חק יעקב (O Ch. 480).* 

The Mishna Verura writes, it is called כוס של אליהו to remind us, the same way Hashem redeemed us from מצרים, so too will he redeem us and send  אליהו הנביא with the Besura of Mashiach’s arrival.

Others say that the reason is since there is a מחלוקת if you need 4 or 5 cups.   אליהו הנביא will be the one to solve this dispute.

The Aruch Hashulchan writes, "Some have a minhag to stand up and say ברוך הבא. All this is to strengthen the אמונה . In Nissan Hashem redeemed us and in Nissan, he will  redeem us again. Opening the door is also to show our אמונה in ביאת משיח.in case אליהו הנביא will appear, we will run out to be מקבל פני משיח with no delay."

None of the Poskim say that אליהו הנביא actually appears, at the  Seder since if we hold 'יש תחומין למעלה מי

אליהו הנביא cannot appear on Shabbos & Yom Tov.

There are numerous stories (probably that's all it is) ofאליהו הנביא appearing at the Seder and drinking the wine.

THE STORY:

The daughter of R. Mordechai Benet zt"l stood up during the Seder and screamed, "Who is this old man drinking

the wine"?  R.M. Benet calmed her down and said it was a חשובע and holy guest who appeared at the table.

That same night his daughter died. R.M.B. claimed she saw אליהו הנביא and because she wasn't quiet about 

it she died.

The story continues that the Viener Kehilla offered tens of thousand golden coins for the כוס.

The Nikulsburger Kehilla wouldn't consider any amount to sell the כוס that אליהו הנביא actually drank from.

*The Piskei Teshuvos quotes the Maharal (70-80 yrs. before the Ch.Yakov)  in Divrei Negidim.

The truth is that the Divrei Negidim is a forgery and not from the Mahral but R. Yidel Rosenberg’s  z”l own invention

Those learning Gemoro, especially Daf Yomi who for the past year have been learning the three בבות  in Nezikin are familiar with the words זבין  (with a Yud) and זבן (without the Yud).   זבין means sold and זבן means bought.

Therefore חד גדיא דזבין אבא should be translated, my father sold, or change the spelling to דזבן.

Mori V'Rabi Harav Hagaon R. Shlomo Miller Shlita said, there is a third possibility to keep the spelling with a Yud but change the pronunciation to DEZVIN instead of DEZABIN.

The translation will change to " One kid the "purchase" of my father. 

How Can He Appear ?

The Gemoro (Eruvin 43a) assumes that  אליהו הנביא 

cannot appear on Shabbos or Yom Tov,

because of the Issur of Chutz L’tchum. 

(if Issur Techumin is למעלה מעשרה )

The Shu”t Chasam Sofer (Chelek 6-98) explains 

that there are two parts to .אליהו הנביא

His Guf (physical body) which is resting in Gan Eden 

Hatachton, in this world. The other

part is his Neshama, which went up to heaven 

and serves as a Malach.

As a Malach Habris (Not obligated in Mitzvos) 

he can appear even on Shabbos 

& Yom Tov. Therefore the Mohel can say 

עמוד על ימיני even on Shabbos & Yom Tov.

In the near future when he will notify us of the

 arrival of the Mashiach  he will appear

physically as a human being . In such a state 

he is Mechuyav in the Mitzvos and cannot

appear on Shabbos & Yom Tov.

The Aruch Hashulchan writes, The Minhag 

at שפוך חמתך is to open the door

to remind us that it's ליל שימורם. In that זכות,

 Mashiach will appear and will

be שופך חמתו on the( בבליים (גויים .

Poskim don't mention opening the 

door for אליהו הנביא . According to the

Chasam Sofer  אליהו הנביא  won't appear 

physically on Yom Tov and there is no

need to open the door for him*. The reason 

to open the door is like the AruchHashulchan 

writes" to remind us that it's  ליל שימורם  "

*For יציאת נשמה we do have a Minhag to open the window
