What colour was the פרה אדומה?

          What colour was the פרה אדומה?
     


We find in the Torah and Chazal, the colour “אדום” can be translated
            a) the actual red colour (red wine)  
            b) the red family, colour (brown, orange etc.)


1)   (Bereishis 25 : 30) הלעיטני נא מן האדום האדום הזה
 It is called red lentils, but its colour is brown.

2)   (Zecharya  1:8)  איש רוכב על סוס אדום   -  סוסים אדומים –
(A man riding on a red horse-red horse)
There are no red horses. There are brown horses.

3)   (Succah 35b)  An Esrog that was peeled and looks like a red date.
 Rashi explains, "All peeled fruits נהפך לאדמימות"  (turn red).
 Peeled or cut fruits turn brown not red.
     
4)   (Bechoros 6a Rashi)  סתם סוסים אדומים   (horses are usually red)
   Highly unusual
     
The colour of a פרה אדומה was not fire engine red nor red wine red.
There are no red cows and there never was.
.
The cow was brown. The uniqueness of the Para Aduma
was not that it was red. It was unique by being completely 
brown, not having two strands of hair in a different colour
other than brown. (white-black)
             
One might argue and claim it still needs to be a certain shade
of brown (orange or light brown etc,) However, we don't
find in the Rambam qualifying what shade of אדום is כשר.

Assuming אדומה is brown there is no reason to insist it to
 be a specific shade.
             
Perhaps, instead of a "red heifer" it should be translated a "brown cow"

Burning Of The Talmud -Parshas Chukas

24 wagon loads of the Talmud burnt                              


In the year 1244 עש"ק פרשת חקת, - Twenty four wagon loads
of the Talmud was burnt in the main square of Paris.

R. Yechiel of Paris had a student named Nicholas Donin שר"י,
who became a משומד.
He went to the pope accusing the Talmud of being against
the נוצרים & אותו האיש.

R. Yechiel of Paris and R. Moshe miKutzi (סמ"ג) tried to
defend the Talmud but to no success.

After the burning of the Talmud, R. Yechiel of Paris
moved to עכו. Hence the first of the Ba’alei
Tosfos in Eretz Yisroel.

The Maharam Mi Rottenberg wrote a  קינה about the burning
of the Talmud. Ashkenazim say this   קינה on Tisha B'av
(שאלי שרופה באש -
קינה מ"א)

One of the powerful stanzas of the קינה.
 אוריד דמעות עדי יהיו כנחל ויגיעו לקברות שני אציליך משה ואהרן
בהר ההר ואשאל היש תורה חדשה בכן נשרפו גליליך

"I will shed tears until they flow like a river and reach the
graves of your two princes Moishe & Aaron who are resting
on the mountain of Hor.
And I will ask them, Is there a Torah that is new and therefore
your scrolls have been burnt"

R.Hillel Verona* writes the Talmud was burnt on the exact
same square, the opponents of the Rambam burned the
Moreh Nevuchim a few years earlier.
They now had realized that they had wronged the Rambam.


*Talmid of R. Yonah who was originally an opponent of the Rambam.

.Did the sing the שיר של יום?
             
The Sefer תורה לדעת* asks,
a) If the לויים actually sang the שיר של יום
b) or they said it while the music was playing.

The Mishna in M' Tamid we say every day
it says,השיר שהלויים היו אומרים.

The Rambam,
(תמידין ומוספין פ"ו ה"ז)  writes ודברו הלויים בשיר

From these two sources, it seems that they didn't sing
it but said it.

Anonymous from Lakewood sent in three sources from
where it seems that they actually did sing the שיר.

 The מהריל said that all רפואות and לחשים mentioned in Shas, are forbidden to be practiced.
It only works under certain conditions.  Someone will try it and if it won’t work might Ch"v ridicule Chazal.

There is one exception, and that is if someone has a (fish) bone stuck in his throat.

The Gemoro ( Shabbos 67a) says that he should bring another bone and place it on the back of his head and say" חד חד נחית בלע בלע נחית חד חד"

This לחש is allowed because it is בדוק ומנוסה (guaranteed) to work in all conditions."

I was just wondering if the Maharil's logic would also apply to the סגולות from צדיקים ומקובלים. Perhaps we shouldn't practice those סגולות in case it won't work and we might ridicule their סגולות.

B) There are different מסורות as to how many Kapitlach (פרשיות) Tehillim consists of.
a) Our מסורה is 150.
b) The Yerushalmi (Shabbos #16 Hl.1) says there are 147 פרשיות.
c) The מאירי on Tehillim has 151

C) According to Rashi the last Kapital Tehillim Dovid wrote was Kapital 72 and ended it with the Pasuk כלו תפלות דוד בן ישי

D) The Kapital למנצח לבני קרח we say 7 times before the תקיעות on Rosh Hashana, was written by the 3 sons of קרח

מחלוקת is beautiful

The Chasam Sofer in the (דרשות (ח"א קפ"ג ד"ה כן  explains the Chazal of "ת"ח מרבים שלום בעולם"

Hashem created the Midos. בושה-עזות ,גאוה -ענוה, שלום-מחלוקת ,
The world is in need of them and cannot exist without them.
However, all these מדות can be used for the good
or ח"ו for the bad.

מחלוקת in תורה learning is a beautiful thing. It forces the
true פשט to come out. Talmidei Chachamim arguing in Torah
reduces the bad מחלוקת & the need for it.
Hence they are "מרבים שלום בעולם"

Parshas Shelach The Secular Zionist

              Harav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld zt"l said, the חטא המרגלים was that they saw ברוח הקדש our generation where the majority in Eretz Yisroel will be  secular Zionist who will try to שמד the rest of the Frum Yidden.

The מרגלים, therefore, held it would better to remain in the מדבר.

On the other hand, יהושע & כלב held and told them
וירשנו אתה כי יכול נוכל לה. We will overcome the Secular Zionist
and have no reason to fear them.

The Amukah Prank

                          THE AMUKAH PRANK


The  Amukah Segulah is a prank invented in the last 50 years.
There is no source in any ספר or a קבלה from any reliable source.

This Segulah was invented by a prankster. It caught on like wildfire
because desperate people do desperate things.

The prankster combined two Rashis next to each other as if it read
כל פסולין שאין מוצאין אשה פונין והולכין שם והיא עמוקה
"All Pesulin who can't find a woman turn & go there.
(Where?) That is Amukah"
(Prankster's Pshat)

The Gemoro (Yevamos 17a) says, why is it called הרפניא? Because
of all the פסולין (Mamzeirim etc.) who turn towards (go to) this
mountain הר- פניא to find a spouse. (& having illegitimate children)

רבא said "This mountain is deeper (עמוקה) than שאול (Gihenom)
From Gihenom one can be redeemed whereas a Mamzer remains
that way forever.

עמוקה is not referring to the town Amukah but the word "deeper".

The רמ"א adds that when he eats it he is required to make 2 ברכות
a) המוציא or מזונות
b) וצונו לאכול תרומה

There are at least 3 פייטנים (Poets) who wrote a Piyut that has
1000 words uninterrupted every word starting with an Aleph.

The first פייטן was ר' אברהם בדרשי   (Provence 13th century)

What about the rest of חזרת הש"ץ?

The (דרכי משה (רמ"א (O.Ch.125) writes that the מהרי"ל
didn’t talk from the beginning of קדושה till after
the אמן of האל הקדוש.*


What about the rest of חזרת הש"ץ?


Yes, you are allowed to talk during
חזרת הש"ץ if you are the Rav.



The ערוך השלחן writes (O.Ch. 125) " If the Rav is asked a שאלה
during חזרת הש"ץ he may and is even obligated to answer
immediately during חזרת הש"ץ and should not wait for after
Davening since it might be a time-sensitive שאלה."

Perhaps, with this ערוך השלחן
.we can explain the מהרי"ל
of not talking only till after the ברכה of האל הקדוש.

The כף החיים explains the מהרי"ל that this would have  
been only when he wasn’t Davening with that
Minyan*, otherwise you may not talk during the
entire Chazaras Hashatz.
