Yitzchok Meir Goldstein Shlita (מחבר ספרי שפתי יצחק ועוד) writes in his Haggadah,  that the Gemoro (Brachos 44b) says, א"ר חסדא אפילו גדיא בר זוזא   Rashi explains שמן וטוב ששוה זוז          From this Rashi, we see that a good & fat  goat is worth only one Zuz The buyer paid double the amount for his goat, way overpriced. WHO WAS THE BUYER & WHO WAS THE SELLER? זבין (with a Yud) means sold, זבן (without the Yud) means bought. Therefore חד גדיא דזבין אבא should be translated, my father sold,  or if you change the spelling to דזבן then the translation is my father bought Mori V'Rabi Harav Hagaon R. Shlomo Miller Shlita said, there is a  third possibility to keep the spelling with a Yud but change the  pronunciation to DEZVIN instead of DEZABIN. The translation will change to " One kid, the "purchase of " my father.

The Kalir Killer

 

One of the original Piyutim for שבת הגדול is the Piyut "אדיר דר מתוחים" *. This Piyut was supposedly written by R. Yanai. R. Yanai was one of the first Paytonim. He was the Rebbe of R. Elazar b. Hakalir. Some claim, him to be the Tanna mentioned in Bavli & Yerushalmi. An old Ksav Yad (manuscript) of R. Efraim from Bonn (Ba’alei Tosfos) was found in the 18th century. R. Efraim writes, “In the land (region) of Lombardia (Italy) this Piyut is not recited. It is said the reason for it is because R. Yanai was jealous of his Talmid R. Elazar b. Hakalir, whose Piyutim were much better than his. R.Yanai placed a scorpion in the shoe of R. E.b.Hakalir and it killed him. Hashem should forgive all who repeat this story if it isn’t true” Shadal (Luzatto) claims this story to be unbelievable, absurd, and not true. He has 3 proofs that it can’t be true. 1) In all homes on the 1st. Seder night we say Yanai's Piyut “ובכן ויהי בחצי הלילה".  2) The Shibolei Haleket quotes the R. Gershom Meor Hagolah who praises highly R. Yanai. 3) The 300 [500] year old Soncino Machzor has the Piyut in there. Today (200years ago) they do say it in Lombardia. Perhaps one more proof.אמבצי 4) Tosfos (Meseches Zevachim 95b) quotes this Piyut. Had he have been a murderer, the above would not have been said or quoted.                       תוספות ד"ה עירה לתוכו זבחים צ"ה ע:"ב   This Piyut is only found in the אוצר התפילות Siddur.to be said during Musaf. It is not found in other Siddurim.

Salonika recipe for חרוסת

 

חרוסת recipe        The שבלי הלקט writes to put into the חרוסת, some ground up earth or ground up brick for זכר לטיט. This is based on the  "גירסא ברשב"ם פסחים קט"ז ע"א  "וחרס שכותשין בו הדק זכר לטיט The Birkei Yosef (Chida) quotes the Maharam de Lunzano  who ridicules this שגעון. He claims it came about because of the wrong Girsa of חרס instead of  חרוסת. The Birkei Yosef  also quotes the Bais David who claims that the elders of Salonika testified on the Minhag in Salonika of grinding up a certain stone based on the Girsa of חרס in the Rashbam

דינא דמלכותא (Law of the land) and 50% of the assets
belong to the (Jewish) wife, (Harav Y.S. Elyashiv zt"l)

Therefore their Chametz needs to be sold to another Goy, 
for it not to become חמץ שעבר עליו הפסח
(ie: A Goy who is a partner with a Yid, their חמץ must be sold) 

2) A Goy who will be becoming a Ger on Pesach

Baruch Epstein Zt"l (תורה תמימה) writes that he thinks the word והזמנים is not part of the Bracha  but Chazal meant for us to fill in the blanks, the name of the specific Yom Tov we are celebrating. eg:  מקדש ישראל וחג המצות - וחג הסוכות etc. the same way we do on Rosh Hashana & Yom Kippur. (מקדש ישראל ויום הזכרון - ויום הכיפורים) Harav Y.B. Soloveitchik Zt"l (Boston) argues vehemently and claims, R.Hashana & Y.Kippur, since they have their own independent קדושה, therefore, they have their individual חתימה. Whereas the שלש רגלים all three of them emanate from one single קדושה, therefore, the חתימה of והזמנים is in order. The משנה ברורה in ביאור הלכה קל"ז:ג holds if the בעל קריאה skipped the פסוק of that specific Yom Tov (On Sukkos he didn't mention the Pasuk of Sukkos) he must repeat the קריאה again. The מ"ב seems to say If the בעל קריאה skipped the פסוק of a different Yom Tov (On Sukkos he didn't mention Shavuos) then there is no need to repeat the קריאה. Harav Y.B. Soloveitchik argues on the משנה ברורה and holds since all the three רגלים emanate from one single קדושה, therefore, regardless of which one of the three רגלים was omitted, he needs to repeat the קריאה.

Mistakes Of Gedolim

 

Mori V'Rabi Harav Hagaon Reb Shlomo Miller Shlita  said,  "The Velt (people of the world) has two misconceptions on Gedolim. 1) A גדול can't make mistakes. 2) If they make a mistake they are not a גדול anymore. Both statements are untrue."  In this week’s  Parsha  (ויקהל) one of the גדולי המפרשים made a mistake with the translation of the word ועשה. ועשה בצלאל- כל מלאכת עבודת הקדש  He mistakenly translated  And  בצלאל made (past tense)  The תרגום אונקלס  has also been mistakenly changed  from ויעביד V’yabeid (He shall do) to ועבד Vavad (He did). The Ibn Ezrah (36 -1) and Rashi in מכות י"ב ע"א  both say, ועשה is a command ( future)  And בצלאל shall make etc.  The ו (Vav) of ועשה changes the word from past tense to future tense  it is said in the name of the מהרי"ל דיסקין “When being מעביר סדרה you should say in the Targum  ויעביד V’yabeid and not the way it is printed in the Chumashim* ועבד “ Vavad” otherwise you are not יוצא שניים מקרא *The new עוז והדר חומש corrected the Targum to ויעביד.
