sandak

The Midrash writes, that when אברהם אבינו was about
to perform the ברית on himself he was somewhat hesitant,
so Hashem held on to him.
Hence וכרת
עמו הברית, (together with him), and this is also
one of the sources of having a סנדק holding the baby at a ברית.

The Steipler Zt"l was questioned regarding the Minhag requesting a
ברכה from the סנדק, where is the מקור for this Minhag?
He responded that he was unaware of any מקור for this Minhag.

Perhaps this can be considered as a source.

The גמרא
ברכות ז' ע"א R Yishmael ben Elisha said that he
entered לפני ולפנים to be מקטיר קטורת and HKBH asked him
to give a Bracha.
We see that the Bracha of a מקטיר קטורת
is so valuable & powerful that even HKBH כביכול desired
a Bracha from him.
סנדקאות is compared to a הקטרת קטורת and therefore the Sandek's
ברכה is also considered valuable and worth pursuing.

Daf Hasavua Nedarim 31 b-Mila On Shabbos

          גדולה מילה שדוחה את השבת

Harav Yosef Sholom Elyashuv zt"l originally held that children born through artificial insemination may not have their Bris done on Shabbos.

In later years he changed his mind and allowed the Bris to be Doche Shabbos on such children.

Harav Ezriel Auerbach shlita explained his Shver as follows:

Based on a Rabbeinu Chananel, artificial insemination is considered Ma'aseh Nissim and therefore would not be  Doche Shabbos.

Since artificial insemination became a very common practice, it is no longer considered Ma'aseh Nissim and is Doche Shabbos.

I was wondering, recently a 60 year old woman gave birth to a boy. What would have happened had she given birth on Shabbos, would it be allowed to perform the Bris on Shabbos. (Ma"aseh Nissim).

Shochet And Mohel

The נוהג כצאן יוסף writes,

"Those standing next to the Mohel say quietly (for the Mohel to hear) the end of the Bracha (על המילה) so to make sure
the Mohel doesn't ח"ו mistakenly end the Bracha with על השחיטה."

In most smaller communities they hired one person who was the Melamed teaching the children, the Shliach Tzibbur,
the Shochet, & Mohel.
The Bracha על השחיטה he made regularly whereas על המילה was done on rarer occasions.

No Gehinom

לז"נ הקדוש, הבחור מנחם בן אברהם אשי הי"ד
נעקד"ה א' אייר תש"ד ע"י הנאצים הארורים ימ"ש

I had theזכות  today of being the בעל ברית (Sandek)  of my Uhr  Einikel
The Leket Yosher* (Y.D. P52) writes that  the Minhag  is to
give Sandekaos to
the great grandfather of the child because the עולם (Velt) says
“ A Sandek for a great grandson
is an אינו רואה פני גיהנם (won’t see the face of Gehinom)
It seems, just because the Velt says so even though there is no known מקור for it we assume
it to be true and the Ribono Shel Olam accepts what the Velt says.

Did you know? (129)

The Mahril writes to look for a Sandek
who is an" Adam Kasher V’tov"  (honest
& good person )  so  that Eliyahu Hanavi
will attend the Bris.

The Mahril seems to say, Eliyahu Hanavi
only attends  Brisos, where the Sandek is
an Adam Kasher V’tov.

Did You Know 64-65-66-67

1)  According to the Maharil, If there is a Bris.
on Tisha Bav the Pasuk ואני זאת בריתי is not omitted when saying ובא לציון

2) Saying "Mazel Tov" to the Ba'alei Simcha  on Tisha B'av is not considered Sheilas Shalom and is permitted
(Shu"t Salmas Chaim R.YCh. Zonenfeld zt"l)

3) According to the Sdei Chemed, on Tisha B'av Nidcha the Ba'alei Bris may wear leather shoes after Chatzos

4)The only day in the year when  it is forbidden to talk to an Akum, is on Tisha B'av (during the Kinos) (Shulchan Aruch O.Ch. 559 :5)

L'Kovod the upcoming Bris from My Einikel

The Maharil writes the reason we say at a Bris, "Hodu
Lashem  Ki Tov*",twice, is because the Gemoro says Arbo'o Tzrichin L'Hodos.

One of the four who need to thank is someone who gets out of
prison. The baby coming out of the mother's womb is like coming out of prison.

The second time is for the Mother (Cholanis)

In Posen (R.A.Eiger zt"l) they were Meikal (lenient) on yellow babies.
Brisos  were performed on babies who were light yellow, because most babies from wealthy families are usually yellow.
(Teshuvas R.A.E.Hachodosh #5)

Since Krias Hashem doesn't require a Kos (wine) R.A.Eiger drank the wine immediately after the Bracha (Asher Kidash Yedid) before Krias Hashem, so there shouldn't be a Hefsek.

According to the Chasam Sofer (O. Ch 158-9) The Mohel and  all who assist him, have the Segulah of becoming rich. (not only Sandek ) provided they volunteer (no remuneration).

The Segulah of Sandeko'os overpowers the Mazal. Even if someone was born in a Mazal to be a poor man, can become rich. Therefore we try to spread the Segulah to many people.

All Mohalim  were born in the Mazal to be rich. Therefore there is no need to spread the Segulah. The same Mohel may perform many Brisos in the same family.

Did you know ?

לז"נ הקדוש ר' אברהם אשי בן הרב שמואל דונט הי"ד

If the Mohel takes money for the Bris , Tachnun should be said,.
if he Davens at a Minyan not connected with the Bris.

how could it be?-Bris Milah Triviah

How could it be, a healthy firstborn (from both parents) boy, we don't do a Bris Milah because

of מתו אחיו מחמת מילה ? (two brothers died from Bris) ????

The firstborn of triplets was born on Erev Shabbos Bein Hashmoshes and the other two were born after night fall.

The firstborn has to wait for his Bris until Sunday. The two younger brothers will have their Bris on Shabbos
.

Therefore if the two younger brothers die during their Bris, he becomes a מתו אחיו מחמת מילה

Bris Minhagim

The Sefer  Zichron Yackov, *1 writes
“When baby boys were taken to  Shul for their Bris,
They put on the head of the baby  a minature Shtreimel (same as the adult males wear on Shabbos)

They also wrapped the baby In a Tallis when they carried him to Shul.

For Kvatter*2 they used a little boy and girl.
The boy wore a Shtreimel and a Tallis.
The girl wore a  Tichel on her head. Both  were dressed up like adults.

Most towns had a Chevra Sandeko'os.
They paid for chicken or meat to feed the new mother.
Some also paid for the Midwife / Doctor and the Bris Seudah.

In return a Gorol was drawn and one of the members got Sandeko'os.

*2   The word comes from G-d Vatter   (G-d Father )
