The Chida describes his travels* to Tunis. He celebrated the Seder at the Rosh Hakohol-R.Yehoshua Hakohen Tanuji.Rachamim. The servant  raised the Seder plate and surrounded it three times over the heads of all the men. Rachamim wasn’t sure how many times to do it for the women. The Chida told him there is a Pasuk in Shoftim (5:30)   רחם רחמתים לראש גבר Rachem = 1 Rachmosaim =2 : 2+1 = 3 times, only L’rosh Gever -over the head of a man and not for a woman. The original Minhag is brought down in th Bais Yosef(O.Ch. 473) in the name of Reb  Yeruchem.” The Minhag is to raise the basket over the heads of the childrenAnd to say    לפיכך אנחנו חייבים –

Parshas Hashavua  שופטים לא תשחית את עצה- כי ממנו תאכל ואתו לא תכרת  דברים כ: י"ט The ט"ז (Y.D.116:6) writes, שאסרו חז"ל מפני הסכנה שלא לקוץ" אילן העושה פירות" "Chazal forbade because of סכנה  to cut down fruit trees"  Isn't it the Torah who forbade  cutting down fruit trees? Perhaps, if we change the  גירסא from שאסרו חז"ל מפני הסכנה to שאמרו חז"ל שלא לקוץ אילן מפני הסכנה , would solve the קושיא  on the ט"ז. The Torah forbade us to cut off the fruit tree. Chazal said* that it is a סכנה* to cut off the fruit tree. *As far as I know, this is the only Mitzvah in the Torah where Chazal teach us that it is dangerous to be עובר the עבירה ** Most Poskim including the ט"ז allow cutting off the tree when the benefit is greater than the tree. They are not concerned in such cases for סכנה

Saying Ledovid In Elul

Minhag Telz -Ledovid in Elul

Minhag Telz is not to say Ledovid by either Mincha or Maariv
Minhag Telz is also not to say Ledovid on Shabbos ,Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur
Minhag Telz is also not to say Ledovid after Yom Kippur

Amongst the many Gedolim whose Minhag was not to say לדוד ה' אורי from Rosh Chodesh Ellul till Simchas Torah was the Vilna Gaon.

The Aderes* writes the reason for not saying it, is because of Tircha Detzibura.

Saying one Kapitel Tehillim takes up too much time from the Tzibbur.

Perhaps we can explain the Aderes -Gaon:

There is no mention in Bavli, Yerushalmi, Rishonim, Tur & Shulchan Aruch etc. to say Ledovid Hashem (in Ellul)

The first to mention to say it Betzibbur** is the Sefer Chemdas Hayomim*** &Sefer Shem Tov Katan which are based on Kabbala****.

The Gaon in general was against adding new Tefillos. He tried to stick to as much as possible to the original Tefillos from the Anshei Knesses Hagedola.

A Shliach Tzibbur who starts one minute late in a Minyan of 100 people, wasted

not one minute but100 minutes. (Tircha of 100 people times 1 minute)

Adding a Kapitel Tehillim which takes to say only one minute can at times

be considered taking 100 minutes.

This might explain why the Gaon

didn't say it.

Parshas Hashavua שופטים תמים תהיה עם ה' אלהיך דברים יח:יג      IT'S NOT A MINHAG & IF YOU TRUST IN HASHEM, DON'T BOTHER DOING IT  The Sefer שלחן העזר quotes the ספר המטעמים*  "חתנים & כלות before walking down to the חופה untie all the knots they are wearing.  The reason for doing so is to prevent from כשפים (witchcraft) which might put a spell on the couple and prevent them from having relations." Untying the knots is not a Minhag but a סגולה people adopted to prevent witchcraft from harming them. The יראים & תמימים (who fear & trust Hashem) rely on  תמים תהי' עם ה' אלוקך  & שומר מצוה לא ידע דבר רע (Don't bother untying)" * Probably the first & original source for this non Minhag practice

What did Reb Moishe Feinstein Hold ?

Parshas Hashavua Devarim 11:31 וירשתם אותה וישבתם בה You shall possess it and shall settle in it (Ramban)   Reb  Moshe Feinstein Zt"l holds that the Mitzvahs ישיבת א"י is applicable today because most Poskim hold like the Ramban. Reb Moshe holds, that today it's a מצוה קיומית and not a מצוה חיובית.  It's not an obligatory Mitzvah but an optional Mitzvah. One is not obligated to move to Eretz Yisroel but if he does he is מקיים מצות ישוב א"י.
