The משומד (apostate)& the Goy

 

The מסורה started in the times of עזרא הסופר*  & the אנשי כנסת הגדולה. This continued on for over a thousand years to the times of the רבנן סבוראי and early גאונים.   The מסורה consists of many parts.** Because of the מסורה, we have a uniform text of the תנ"ך, which both the פרושים & צדוקים agree on.   The מסורה we have today is only because of  the (apostate) משומד, יעקב בן חיים אבן אדוניהו and the Goy Daniel Bombergini   יעקב בן חיים and אליהו בחור were both employed  as editors in the printing house of Danielle Bombergini. D.Bomberg, an Italian Goy originally from Antwerp was the first printer of the complete  ש"ס, the מקראות גדולות חומש and many more ספרים.   יעקב בן חיים convinced his boss of the need to fix and reorganize the מסורה which was completely flawed full of mistakes & disorganized. Bomberg invested huge sums of money to acquire many different manuscripts for Yakov to work with. Yaakov worked on it for years. He fixed & organized the entire מסורה. In the year 1547, the first מקראות גדולות חומש with the new version of the מסורה was printed.   Yakov wrote a fascinating and informative הקדמה***  for the new Chumash. Those reading it will never believe that it was written by a משומד.     It is interesting, his co-worker, Eliyahu Bachur praises  his work and curses him (for converting) in the same sentence.   Eliyahu Bachur writes:    " I have never seen in any of the previous  ספרים such perfect, beautiful and organized work as was done  by the person whose name used to be  "Yaakov, תהי נשמתו צרורה ***בצרור נקוב "   Hence the  מסורה we have today is from a משומד and a Goy     *They were called Sofrim because the counted the  letters, words, Pesukim and Parshios. (Ms. Kidushin) **Some parts of the מסורה,(there are more)  1) How many letters and words in each Sefer (Tanach) 2) The טעמים (known as the Trop)  3) The קרי & כתיב  4) נקודות (How to pronounce) 5) Begin & end Pesukim & Parshios 6) How many times the word with the same  spelling appears. 7)  חסירות ויתירות (spelling) 8) Large & small letters 9) Similar words elsewhere in Tanach 10) When it's the name of Hashem and when not   *** The original Chumashim had his name printed. In the later prints, the name was removed and  replaced as הקדמת המעתיק. Most Chumashim printed today removed the הקדמה   ***A bundle with a hole (everything falls out. a play on words based on a פסוק in חגי

The 4 Minhagim

 

Parshas Hashavua ויצא   There are 4 different Minhagim when to start pronouncing ישכר instead of יששכר. 1) The first time the name appears. (פ' ויצא). 2) From the second time & on (פ' ויגש) 3) From Parshas פנחס & on 4) From Parshas שמות & on Some, who claim, that the Minhagim 1-2-3 are based on reasons 1-2-3 1) According to Dikduk ישכר is the proper pronunciation therefore we always pronounce it correctly (even the first time) 2) The first time we pronounce the original name as it was given. From then on we cover up the 2nd reason. 3)  The changeover from יוב to ישוב is in פ' פנחס therefore we do the same with the changeover from יששכר to ישכר. 4) I don't know. Perhaps the עולם has a Pshat Reasons 1-2-3 to pronounce it ישכר. 1) In דקדוק there are times when two same letters next      to each other to pronounce only the first letter.     . מחצצרים דהי"א ט"ו:כ"ד is pronounced מחצרים    2) The two ש's in יששכר symbolizes 2 times שכר a) The שכר of giving זלפה to יעקב b) The שכר of Leah giving away the דודאים so she can spend an extra night with יעקב. Being the second שכר is a לשון גנאי (not appropriate to publicize) therefore we drop the second ש. 3) The second ש was given to יוב his son who in Parshas פנחס is called ישוב (see רש"י במדבר כ"ו:כ"ד) מפרשים write It was discovered later on of an עבודה זרה named יוב so they removed one ש from יששכר and added it to יוב and it became ישוב.

The Yahrzeit candle

 

לז"נ הני תרי נשי דיתבן בגן עדן, רות בת ר' צבי יהודה ופעסיל בת ר' בונם ע"ה יום השנה ז' כסליו                      נר ה' נשמת אדם משלי כ' כ"ז There is no mention anywhere in ש"ס, רמב"ם,טור,שו"ע about lighting a candle on the day of a Yahrzeit.  The Mishna in Ms.Brachos (53a) that says not to use a נר של מתים for הבדלה, refers to a candle used for the Levaya etc. and not a Yahrzeit candle, which probably may be used for הבדלה. The   Gemoro  כתובות ק"ג ע"א  Rebbie left a צוואה  with his sons to have a candle burning at the table refers to Shabbos candles and not Yahrzeit candles. The first mention of נר נשמה is probably the כל בו in Hilchos Yom Kipurim. The כל בו writes to light a נר for deceased parents, on Erev Yom Kippur, so they will have a כפרה. The parents have a כפרה, because of ברא מזכה אבא, Mitzvohs a child does benefit the deceased parents. The טור writes (630) There is a special Inyan to have lots of candles in Shul on Yom Kippur. In the olden days, the largest and one of the few expenses a Shul had, was נר למאור. Beeswax was a very expensive commodity. It is possible, the חכמים tried to entice people to donate נר למאור therefore attached the special Segulah of כפרה for the מתים, a Siman Tov for the living and the Pasuk of נר ה' נשמת אדם for a Yahrzeit candle. The Chasam Sofer (Shu"t #6:27) writes he is unaware of a so-called מצוה רבה to light Yahrzeit candles at home or even at the קבר. The ביאור הלכה ס' תקיד quotes from the שו"ת כתב סופר (O.Ch65) that "on Yom Tov when we may not light a נר של בטלה ( a candle that has no purpose) it is best to light the Yahrzeit candle (if it wasn't lit before Yom Tov) in the room where you eat (purpose) or even better, to light it in Shul. (Mitzvah) Only for a שעת הדחק may we light a Yahrzeit candle for parents since it's done for their honor (כיבוד אב ואם) According to the מהרש"ל even though lighting a candle for parents may not be a Mitzvah, but since everybody lights candles and some are even מקפיד on this more than other Mitzvos, therefore, we allow him to light the candle on Yom Tov, so he will not be מצטער and have no Simchas Yom Tov. Mrs.Ruth Stefansky ע"ה, my mother in law was Niftar at the young age of 27-years leaving behind her husband Rav Akiva Stefansky Zt"l and 3 young children Mrs.Edith  (פעסיל) Dohany ע"ה &  her family were involved in saving hundreds of families from the Nazis ym"s . Amongst them, was my Mother ע"ה & her 2 siblings. Mrs. Dohany was also מוסר נפש  in helping Yidden behind the Iron curtain ברוחניות ובגשמיות  She was מוסר נפש having בריתות מילה and the סעודות performed behind the iron curtain. She sent with tens of Shluchim (My wife & I were one of them) medication, food & money and thereby being מציל נפשות of Yidden living behind the iron curtain Yehi Zichronon Beruchin

 

 

Its Not True

 

One of the חכמי ישראל wrote in one of his books,
"Many if not most of the סיפורי חסידים are grossly
exaggerated and some are not even true.

It doesn't really matter if it is not true as long
as there is a moral to the story.
If the story teaches you a lesson it's not important
for the story to be true. The story is only a משל to
make the point. A משל need not be true."

Last week I wrote,

"As far as I know, the only time* that the Torah ever
points out a husband loving his wife is by Yitzchok
. ותהי לו לאשה ויאהבה בראשית כ"ד:ס"ז. " 

Some of the עולם pointed out to me of the פסוק in
בראשית כ"ט:ל  it says ויאהב גם את רחל (after marriage)
Therefore, what I wrote "it's the only time" is not true but
the moral of the story is.

Which Rebbe Should You Go For A Bracha

 

The שו"ת מהרש"ל: כ writes, the Chazal of --אינו דומה תפילת צדיק בן צדיק applies only to the תפילת צדיק for his own personal needs. However, תפילות for others then the opposite is true and it is more advantageous to have a צדיק בן רשע a בעל תשובה to Daven for you. It seems from the מהרש"ל, You should rather get a ברכה from a Rebbe who is a self-made צדיק than a  צדיק who is a בנן של קדושים

According to Mori V'Rabi Harav Hagaon R. Shlomo Miller Shlita  1)  Having a Goy push a wheelchair or a baby carriage in a רשות הרבים since their handles are above 10 טפחים, it is considered a שבות דשבות. 2) The היתר of שבות דשבות (even במקום מצוה) is not always applicable a Rav needs to be consulted. 3) At Outdoor Minyanim you may not have a Goy turn on the propane heater on Shabbos.

אולי ימצאון שם עשרה   Parshas Hashavua חיי שרה We started with three צדיקים in this week's Parsha (חיי שרה) Thanks to the עולם  who wrote in, we have in Parshiyos וירא  חיי שרה a total of 9 צדיקים. 1) אברהם 2) יצחק 3) ישמעאל  4) אליעזר 5) אבימלך * 6) לוט ** 7) ענר *** 8) אשכול 9) ממרא * אבימלך said on himself הגוי גם צדיק תהרוג - Rashi in Tehillim quotes the Midrash     that he was a צדיק. ** When one sees אשת לוט he makes two Brachos. The second Bracha is זוכר הצדיקים. The כף החיים writes this Bracha refers to לוט. *** The Midrash writes it was called קרית ארבע because of the four צדיקים who lived there אברהם,ענר,אשכול, ממרא
