Who in the hell?

 ------------הא בפושעי ישראל הא בפושעי עובדי כוכבים
דאמר ריש לקיש פושעי ישראל אין אור גיהנם שולטת בהן 

Ploni after 120 years comes up to the עולם האמת. 
The בית דין של מעלה reviews all his זכויות
and all his חובות. Unfortunately, the עבירות outweigh 
the מצוות ומעשים טובים.

Ploni is sentenced to גיהנם.  Ploni asks from
the אב הרחמים for a second chance. He doesn’t
want to go to
גיהנם.

The רבש"ע gives him a second chance and sends
him down again to עולם הזה. The רבש"ע wants to
make sure 
that Ploni won't waste another lifetime 
coming back again with the חובות outweighing the מצות.
The second time around Hashem sends him down as a
poor man. עני חשוב כמת The dead cannot sin therefore
this time when he comes up his חובות won't outweigh
his זכויות and there will be no גיהנם for Ploni.

The same story happens to Almoni. He too gets a second
chance. Hashem sends him down as a wealthy man.
Almoni's personal זכויות are not enough to outweigh his
חובות but combined with the זכויות of all Almoni's beneficiaries
whom he supported during his lifetime tip the scales in his favour.

Berl is also in a similar situation. Hashem doesn't want him
to end up in גיהנם so Hashem makes him ר"ל sick.
While he is sick he can't do עבירות. All the pain and suffering
reduces his חובות and there is no גיהנם for Berl.

Hashem sends down Shmerl as a שוטה who is פטור מן המצות.
He too has no חובות and there is no גיהנם for Shmerl.

Hashem loves his children who are all מליאין מצות כרמון Hashem
will make sure their חובות will always be less than their זכויות
so no one ends up in גיהנם.

If so, why and for whom was גיהנם created?

גיהנם was created for the פושעי עובדי כוכבים,
the רשעים בני עשיו וישמעאל, the creators of  גיהנם in
this world  who slaughtered and burned the בני ישראל
for the past thousands of years. These  פושעים ורשעים
are fully entitled to enter and remain in גיהנם.

PI Todays Daf

 

 



DAF YOMI

In today's daf   we learn about the ratio between the circumference (עיגול) and diameter (קו) of a circle as it relates to a קורה and the pool of Shlomo. 

The gemara quotes the possuk in מלכים א ז כג :

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ אֶת־הַיָּ֖ם מוּצָ֑ק עֶ֣שֶׂר בָּ֠אַמָּה מִשְּׂפָת֨וֹ עַד־שְׂפָת֜וֹ עָגֹ֣ל ׀ סָבִ֗יב וְחָמֵ֤שׁ בָּֽאַמָּה֙ קוֹמָת֔וֹ וקוה [וְקָו֙] שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים בָּֽאַמָּ֔ה יָסֹ֥ב אֹת֖וֹ סָבִֽיב׃

"Then he made the pool of cast metal, 10 cubits across from rim to rim, rounded, and it was 5 cubits high, and it measured 30 cubits in circumference".


Some have scorned the Torah by pointing out that the ratio identified here is inaccurate. Mathematicians have proven that the actual ratio is Pi, or 3.1415....

This means that the ratio of 1:3 identified in the possuk and the gemara is off by about 4.5 percent. 

Now, the term for circumference in the possuk is קו. However, for some reason the כתיב has it spelled קוה. 

Explains the גר"א: the גמטריה of קו is 106. The גמטריה of קוה is 111. The ratio of 106 to 111 is the same as the ratio of 3 to Pi / 3.1415.... (106/111 = .9549..., and 3/3.1415 = .9549...)

This can be illustrated by the following equation: 3 × (111/106) = 3.1415. 

3.1415 is Pi down to four decimals!!!

Some have explained that in general the קרי is an expression how we apply the Torah into our lives. Sometimes, it must vary from the  כתיב,  when the latter,  as a manifestation the absolute truth,  is beyond our ability to apply. 

Although one could get very technical and say that the above calcultion works only down to four decimals, as Pi is  3.14159265.... and 3 × 111/106 is 3.14150943....

However this tiniest discrepancy is not an issue; because in fact, Shlomo could not make a perfectly scientific circle down to such a minute measure. Every human made circle must be at least very slightly oval, thus slightly diminishing the length of the circumference in ratio to the  (longer) diameter of the oval.  

Thus,  in reality, it is perfectly possible that  the circumference was actually  30 × 111/106 and
not exactly 10 × pi.

What's the difference?

The Gemoro (חולין ס"ו) says “Akunas, is a type
of fish that loses its scales when it is taken out
of the water. It is kosher because it was born with scales.
 
The ערוך writes that דייני ישראל need to
verify that it is indeed  the Akunas Fish, only then
may you eat it. 

The Gemoro (Chulin 63b) says that a hunter is
trustworthy to say that his Rebbe
told him that this particular bird is kosher.
The Gomoro says his Rebbe refers
to his hunting teacher. (not his Rov)

Why for identifying kosher birds we don’t need
a Rov and to identify kosher fish we do need a Rov?

WORDS ALONE CAN CHANGE A סוכה פסולה INTO A סוכה כשירה
(2 examples)

A 2 walled סוכה built in a מבוי one may consider
the לחי  of the מבוי as a Mechitza  (3d wall) for theסוכה 
on Shabbos Sukkos
 only.

The reason is because of מיגו . Since it is considered
a Mechitza for Shabbos it is also considered  a Mechitza
for the סוכה.
This 2 walled סוכה is kosher only on Shabbos and
not in the weekdays.

Someone being מקבל שבת early and doing so by saying
מזמור שיר ליום השבת changes a non-kosher סוכה into
a kosher one.


O.Ch. 630 : 7

 

A סוכה, higher than 20 אמות is פסול.

If you place straw etc. on the floor of the סוכה and
thereby reducing the height, it is kosher, only if
you are מבטל בפה the straw to the floor. You must
verbalize & say, that you plan to keep the straw there

According to the (דרישה (אבהע"ז ס"ה, by attending the Badekung
(covering the face of  the כלה)
one is מקיים מצות הכנסת כלה


Perhaps, it's worthed to attend weddings early enough to make it for
the Badeken so one can be מקיים מצות הכנסת כלה 
one of the few Mitzvohs where we are מבטלין תלמוד תורה for it.

When drinking  לחיים, instead of wishing each other with wealth, health, and long life they wish each other
יהי רצון that our צדיק should reveal himself

The Zohar* writes on the Pasuk in "זכריה ט:ט  "עני ורוכב על החמור
The word "עני" is a (שם (סוד and stands for עירובין נדה יבמות
( Because of the lack in Torah, משיח is a עני riding a חמור 
instead of a king riding a horse)

R Yakov Emdin Zt"l in his ספר מטפחת סופרים writes, "This line (עני)
was said in jest on these three מסכתות because they are the
most difficult מסכתות in Shas." (learned poorly)
He has a hard time believing this  שם which is based
on a joke should be coming from the תנא רשב"י and for sure he
would not have heard it from (משה רבינו (רעיא מהימנא

The Rambam argues on the Gemoro

The Rambam argues on the Gemoro. How can he do so?



The Rambam (איגרות הרמב"ם) argues on the Chazal of
 ארבעים יום קודם יצירת הולד בת קול יוצאת ואומרת בת פלוני לפלוני*

The Rambam's argument is that this cannot be true, being
getting married is a Mitzvah and one of the fundamental
principles we believe in is בחירה.

If it is predestined to get married then he has no בחירה
in performing the Mitzvah.

How can the Rambam argue on Chazal 

just because he has a Kushya on them?
