Not so holy candles according to The Bavli

According to the בעל המאור and other Rishonim, there is a three way מחלוקת re the holiness of the Chanukah candles.

1) may not be used even for another מצוה

2) may not be used for counting money etc. but may be used for another מצוה

3) the light of the candle may be used even for counting money. only when using the actual candle or fire is there a ביזוי מצוה

In -
מסכת סופרים פ"כ - הנרות הללו קדש הם ואין
will hold #1 ie. Chanukah candles are holy and one may not use its light even to perform another מצוה.

In the Bavli we have a מחלוקת between ר"י אמר ר' אסי who holds #2 and שמואל who holds #3

How we rid bad dreams

What does Birkas Kohanim have to do with bad dreams?

The Toras Chaim (Bava Kama 55a) writes, “Birkas Kohanim
is a form of Nevuah (prophecy).
The Kohanim are repeating words Hashem tells them to
say, while the Shechina is hovering over them.
Birkas Kohanim has 60 Osios.(Alphabets)
The Gemoro says that dreams are a 1/60 of Nevuah.
Someone who has a bad dream (1/60 Nevuah) can nullify  it with the 60 Osios of the Nevuah of Birkas Kohanim.

The Sefer Chasidim (447) writes, "if you had a good dream, don't tell it to your wife. She might tell others and then the dream won't come true".

  • Parshas Hashavua

                         מלאכים ממש

Kabbalists  had a  practice of  forcing an oath on
    the
Angels   ( משביעין את המלאכים ).
"Hashem gives permission to the מלאכים to do as they are commanded (by humans) even if the recipients  are  not worthy and have no זכויות in their favour". (Levush)
There used to be a Minhag for Chazanim to force an oath on the מלאכים.The Chazanim were concerned, an עין הרע will cause them to lose their voice during Davening.
The Chazanim had a Nusach they said, before saying המלך.(Yomim Noroim)
בשם שמעי' -------(שמות של מלאכים)---- אני פלוני בן פלוני משביע אני עליכם
שתסייעו לי שאתפלל היום בקול רם ונעים וערב ואל יחר גרוני ואל ילאה רוחי וכוחי
(In the name of the Malochim --- I Ploni the son of Ploni, place a Shevuah
on you (מלאכים) that you will help me to Daven today with a voice that is loud, pleasant  and sweet, and my throat shouldn’t anger (cough) and my spirit and strength shouldn’t tire.)
The Levush (O.Ch.584) was against this השבעה (oath). He claims it is wrong to force Hashem to accept your Tefillos.

The acceptance of Tefillos is dependant on the כוונת הלב, and you may not force it. The second issue the Levush had against it, was, Hefsek, The Nusach was said after ברוך שאמר.(before Hamelech)
The Levush suggest to eliminate it altogether and if not possible, then it should be said before ברוך שאמר.
  * loss of voice would be a sign of non acceptance of Tefilos

Nov 22

The Maharil writes that we start saying ותן טל ומטר  on the 22nd* day in November and the siman is בך יבורך ישראל
?

The Mahril (1365-1427) had  the Julian calendar. 60 days from the Tekufah** was November 22.

In 1582  the Gregorian calendar was Introduced.60 days from the Tekufah
is Dec.4. (until year 2100 then it will be on Dec.5)***

*The Abudraham mentions the 22nd & 23d

**Solar year divided by 4 (Tekufos)
=91days, 7 hours + x minutes

***every 100 years it keeps moving up by
a day, except for a century that is divisible
by 400 example 2,000 (in the year 2000
we didn't move to the 5th

BAR MITZVAH PARSHA

How do we know that a young man becomes Bar Mitzvah at age 13?

This week's Parsha (וישלח)

ROITEH BENDEL- RED STRING

             ROITEH BENDEL- RED STRING

Some who claim to be Kabbalists believe that by placing a red string around your wrist you will be protected against עין הרע. You will even be blessed with health, wealth, children ,beautiful house and a fancy new car. This works best if the string  was used in the past to surround the מצבה of Kever Rochel.

The practice of red string goes back to the times of the
תנאים.  The Tosefta (Shabbos 7: 1)  enumerates all the
practices that are forbidden because of דרכי אמורי.
one of them is placing a red string on the finger.

The קיצור סמ"ג writes if there will be a time,[ ch”v]
when putting on תפילין will be outlawed.  Then
one shall tie a red string on his hand to remind him about the דם ברית.

This suggestion sounds strange and ridiculous.
One shouldn’t be surprised finding such silly and absurd statements In the קיצור סמ"ג.

The actual Mechaber of this Sefer was not ר' משה מקוצי as many believe. It was none other but a Goyishe priest, an anti semite, named Sebastian Munster  ימ"ש . Sebastian was a student of ר' אליהו בחור who taught him לשון הקודש.

Is last least?

Is last least?

It is customary when calling up the last speaker at a simcha or function to say  "אחרון אחרון חביב".
It is also customary to honour special people with ברכה אחריתא.
It's done so, as to suggest that this כיבוד is a חשובע כיבוד

Is last, more of a כיבוד than the ones before?

The phrase אחרון אחרון חביב comes from Rashi in Parshas וישלח .
Yakov placed his family to stand in front of Eisav , in the order of his love for them. Hence, first the Shfochos & their children then Leah & her children and אחרון אחרון חביב Rochel & Yosef. ( distanced farthest  from Eisav) They were placed there for greater protection and has nothing to do with כבוד.
It is very likely that the last כיבוד is the least of the כיבודים and the phrase is used, when calling up the last one, just to appease him for getting the last (least) כיבוד.

The Gemoro in Gittin 60a & Shulchan Aruch O.Ch. 136 lists whom to call up
to the Torah after Kohen & Levi. The Gemoro says you start with the most חשובע person (Talmid Chacham & Parnes ) until you get to the last two עליות
(שישי* & שביעי) where everyone can be עולה.  According to the Gemoro and Shulchan Aruch , last עליות  are the least כיבוד.

The Mishna Verurah  (136 sk5) writes in the name of the Achronim ,
"Today the Minhag Is for the Godol Hatzibur (The Rov etc.) to be mesayem the sidrah"  (takes Achron.)

There might be two reasons for this practice. a) אין המצוה נקראת אלא על מי שגומרה
b) The Rabonim who are עולה אחרון are practicing humility. (Praven Anivus)

For this reason שישי became a חשובע עליה. Being the Gemoro says that
From שישי and on everyone may be עולה, there were Rabonim who were humble
and asked to be called up for שישי . Eventually, it became the חשובע עליה to
be given to Rabonim.

*The Zohar disagrees with the Bavli and considers Shishi as a Chashuva Aliya.

The four questions די פיר קושיות

  • The four questions   די פיר קושיות

Yakov gives Rochel a secret code, so that her father
won't cheat him. Rochel decides on her own, to disclose it
to her sister Leah so that she will not be embarrassed.

1) What right does Rochel have giving away the secret
code she was entrusted with?

2) Shouldn’t she have told Yakov right at the beginning that
she can’t go along with this scheme? (not to embarrass Leah)

3) Why was Yackov not concerned with Leah’s embarrassment?

4) What right did Leah have to fraudulently marry Yakov?

The Name Game-Naming a child after a non-Frum family member

According to Mori V’Rabi Harav Hagaon Reb Shlomo Miller shlita:
Naming a child after a non-Frum family member is acceptable & at times even recommended.

The main reason we name after an individual who passed away is to honour him or his living relative. It is usually  done as Hakaras Hatov we have for them.

Hakaras Hatov overrules all the reasons of not naming after a non-Frum person.

We find Bnei Yisroel as a Hakaros Hatov named their children after Alexander the Goy.

Did you know?(196) PROVEN SEGULA

Proven Segulah by Rav Hai Gaon

The Minhag is to stretch out the והוא רחום & ברכו on Motzai Shabbos. (said slowly) (
רמ"א או"ח רצ"ג:ג)

The שערי תשובה quotes the בה"ג that one should also answer back ברוך ה' המבורך לעולם ועד slowly. Doing so prevents bad things from happening in the coming week.

The Chida writes, he saw the handwriting* of R Chaim Vital who quoted רב האי גאון that stretching out the ברוך ה' המבורך on Motzai Shabbos is a proven Segulah to have הצלחה.

Supposedly, R Ch.Vital asked that all his כתבים should be destroyed before they bury him and it was done so. ???

my story or history

WHEN WAS THE BA'AL SHEMTOV NIFTAR
?

WHO DID THE TAHARA & KEVURAH?

In a Ksav Yad (manuscript) from the son of the Toldos it is written
The Besht was Niftar on the first day of Shavuos 6th of Sivan
on a Wednesday.

Many other Seforim follow this Mesorah (tradition) and agree
he was Niftar on the first day YomTov.

T
he Sefer Melietzei Aish and some other Seforim claim The Besht
was Niftar the second day of Shavuos. (can't be on a Wednesday)

The previous Skolye Rebbe zt"l said There is a Mesorah that the
Besht said  " At my Yetzias Neshama all clocks in Meshbuz will stop".
The Besht was Niftar the second night Shavuos at midnight
and all the clocks in Meshbuz stopped exactly at12.00

(I wonder how many clocks Meshbuz had in those days)

The Darkei Chaim V'sholom (Minchas Elozor) writes The Besht was
Niftar on the first day Yom Tov and the Chasidim followed the
Halacha יתעסקו בו עממין to have Goyim take care of the body and
the Kevura.

The Sefer Shemuos V'Sipurim writes " R. L. Y. Schneerson zt"l asked
from The Lubavitcher Rebbe The Marshab zt"l (R. Sholem Ber)
Who took care of the body of the Besht ?" (YomTov)

The Marshab answered" the body of the Besht didn't require
others to take care of
it.

A different version of his answer "The Besht buried himself.after
his Petira, no grave diggers were needed."
