Invented Yom Tov

In the Sefer Ta’amei Haminhagim(p262) In the chapter Inyonei Hilulla D’Rashbi it says:

  “The Yahrzeit day of the Tanna Reb Meir, is not mentioned anywhere.  People recently made up a new Yom Tov as if the Yahrzeit is on Pesach Sheini.  It is  known their whole  intention  was, to make money with another Hillula.”

He also quotes a letter from the Ish Haemes  R. Mottel Slonimer zt”l who harshly criticizes them  for being עובר בל תוסיף by inventing this new Yom Tov.

The Sdei Chemed (Asifas Dinim Ma'areches Eretz Yisroel) wrote a letter to the Sephardic Chachamim in T’verya ,asking for the source of the new celebration- the Hillula of Reb Meir.

“On  earlier celebrations (Lag Baomer) the Rabonei Ashkenaz

(Chasam Sofer Shoel Umeishiv)  have complaints &  are

pained and now we come up with a new Hillula”.

The Sephardi Chachamim answered,  even though

 the Yahrzeit of R.Meir  is not known it is still proper to do the

Hilulla to raise funds for the Bais Midrash built at the Tzion. 

The Sdei Chemed didn’t accept their argument.

In the Luach Davar Be'Ito ( M.Genuth), on the 14th Iyar

he entered Hillulas Reb Meir Ba'al Hanes

a few lines later in smaller letters he writes "There is no

Mesorah for the day of the Petirah".

The Hebrew Artscroll Gemoro misquotes from the Sefer Beniyahu*1 “ Brurya the wife of R. Mier Ba’al

Haness”.

The actual loshon of the Beniyahu is, “ Brurya the wife of R. Mier, the wife of the great Chover,

Ba’al Haness”.

It might sound insignificant, but there is an important  difference.

According to Artscroll’s incorrect quote. R. Mier the husband of Brurya is called R.Mier Ba’al Haness. (similar to R.Y.M. Kagen (Pupko)*2 is known today as the Chofetz Chaim etc.)

According to the original Beniyahu, Brurya the wife of R. Mier who was a great Talmid Chochom and a Ba’al Haness.  

Ba’al Haness is not part of his name, but a description

of his greatness .

I wrote in the past that the Tanna R. Mier and R. Mier Ba’al Haness were two different  people. Artscroll is not aware of it. The Ben Ish Chai could have been aware

of it.

It was changed to Kagen to avoid the Russian draft.

DAF HASHAVUA-Who is Reb Meir

The Gemoro (according to our girsa) says that R. Meir’s original name

was not R. Meir but R. Nechemya . Others say his name was R. Elazar

ben Aroch. He was also called R. Nehorai.

 

R. Chananel has a different girsa in the Gemoro.

R. Meir’s original name was R. Meyosha.*  They called him R.Meir

because he lit up the eyes of the Chachamim in Halacha.

 

There was  another Tana who was called R. Nehorai , his original

name was R. Nechemya or R. Elazar ben Aroch. They called him

R. Nehorai , also for the same reason that he lit up the eyes etc.

 

The Seder Hadoros writes that R.Chananel ‘s girsa is the correct one

There were two different Tanaim , one R.Meir and the other R. Nehorai.

* The Rambam in Hakdama to his Pirush Hamishnayos enumerates

37 Tanaim who are mentioned in Mishna only once. One of them

is R.Meyosha. (seems to argue with R. Chananel who claims it is R. Meir)

 

PS.  1) Eloko dMeir Aneini  does not refer to the Tana R. Meir.

       2) R. Meir Ba’al Haness does not refer to the Tana R. Meir.
