Unlike the Minhag of most Ashkenaz Yidden,the Gaon's Minhag was not to say לדוד ה' אורי  from R. Chodesh Ellul to Simchas Torah.   The אדרת writes the reason for the Gaon was because of טירחא דציבורא.   Saying one extra Kapitel Tehillim takes  up too much time of the ציבור.   Perhaps we can explain the Aderes /Gaon,   There is no mention in Bavli, Yerushalmi, Rishonim, Tur, Shulchan Aruch, Kisvei Arizal, etc.  to say לדוד ה' אורי ( Ellul) The מטה אפרים is the first Halacha Sefer to mention this Minhag. The first to mention to say it בציבור is the Sefer Chemdas Hayomim* & the Sefer Shem Tov Katan who are ספרי קבלה   The Gaon, in general, was against adding additional Tefillos & Pesukim not originating from the אנשי כנסת הגדולה   Wasting one minute of a רבים is multiplied by the number of people in the Minyan    Adding a Kapitel Tehillim which takes to say only one minute can at times be considered taking 100 minutes. (A Shul with 100 מתפללים) This might explain why the Gaon considered it טירחא דציבורא to add לדוד ה' אורי אמבצי   *controversial Sefer

The Levush (O.Ch.584 : 2 ) writes "A person who gets an Aliyah is happy.

Pikudei Hashem Yeshorim  Mesamchei Leiv.

A happy Ba'al Tokeah has more strength and will blow the Shofar without

interruptions and mistakes."

Why Do We Say Ledovid In Elul

               KESIVAH VACHASIMA TOVAH

Starting from Rosh Chodesh Ellul till Shmini Atzeres there is a Minhag to say twice a day 

”Ledovid Hashem Ori”.

This Minhag is not mentioned in Shas, Shulchan Aruch, Kisvi Ha’ari Zal  or in the original Machzorim.

One of the first Poskim who brings this Minhag is the Mateh Efrayim. (R. Efrayim Zalmen Margulios).

There were Chasidic dynasties who didn’t follow this Minhag. (Choze Milublin , Zidichoiv, Apte, Sanz & Ropshitz.

The Ma’ase Rav writes that the Vilna Gaon didn’t say it. Today almost all Yeshivishe and

Chasidishe Minyonim, do say it. The one exception is, Chasidim from the Sanzer dynasty. (Bobov, Klausebburg etc.)

There are different reasons given for not saying it.

The true  reason  is because the first mention of this Minhag, is brought down in a Sefer called “ Chemdas Yomim”.

The Chemdas Yomim  was probably the one who started this Minhag.

The Sefer Chemdas Yomim  has no name of the Mechaber (Author) on the Shar Blatt.

The Yavetz and many Chassidic Rebbes, claimed  that the Mechaber was Nosson Hoazosi

(Nathan from Gaza). Nosson Hoazosi was  Shabsai Zvi’s  Novi Sheker and right hand man.

One of the Rishonim*, says that you should have

a Shliach Tzibbur who is married (Yomim Noraim) ,

because it says in Tehillim (51-19)

 לב נשבר ונדכא אלהים לא תבזה

A broken heart Hashem will not despise.

This year, on  Shabbos (Nitzavim Vayelech), not only should you learn the two sidrahs.

(Parshas Hashavua) You should also start a third one and continue on for the next

six days.

The Chida in Bikurei Yosef quotes R. Yisroel Lingo who quotes the Sefer Mesaprim Tehilos Hashem.

On the 25^th day of Ellul (this coming Shabbos) the first day of creation, you should learn from

" Breishis Boro Elokim" until Yom Echad.

On the second day till Yom Sheini and so on every day. 

On Rosh Hashana the day creation was completed you start from Yom Hashishi till end of Parsha.

What does Tzom got to do with Teshuva ,&  Kol with Tefillah ?

What is he trying to explain Tzedakah = money?

The Rambam Hl. Teshuva brings all the ingredients for Teshuva ,(Azivas Hachet, Charata, Vidu and Kabala Al Hatid)

 and no mention of fasting.

The Gemoro says that those who think you need Kol for

Tefillah are from the small believers. Wouldn't Kavanah

be more appropriate for Tefilah?

Mavirin Roa Hagezeirah can be interpreted two ways

1) Prevents bad Gezeiros from ch”v coming.

2) Removes (rids) bad Gezeiros that ch”v  already came .

To prevent bad Gezeiros  from coming the formula is

Teshuva, Tefilla and Tzedaka

To get rid of bad Gezeiros that ch”v. came, then you

do what The Rambam writes in Hl.Taniyos .

There is a mitzvah d’Rabanan to fast                       

                                   Kol

(א- הל' א') מצות עשה מה"ת לזעוק ולהריע בחצוצרות  

 Mitzvah min Hatorah to blow trumpets & scream

to Hashem.

Tzom Kol Mammon is not an interpretation of

Teshuva , Tefillah , Tzedakah    but a different formula

for a different situation.

   

Eating Bitter Foods On Rosh Hashana

The Aruch Hashulchan (O. Ch. 583 :3) writes ," On the first night of Rosh Hashana

we avoid  eating sour and bitter foods.

Pepper is an exception, because ,you can't eat fish without pepper."

Many years ago I heard, that in Yeshivas Telz they served chrain on R.H.

The reason, I heard was, you can't eat Gefilte fish without chrain.
