What's for supper tonight? YES : Cabbage with Rice. Wine NO : Meat, Lentils, Chumus, Water.  ? : Legumes The רמ"א תרצ"ה:ב  writes to eat " מאכל זרעונים" (seeds) on Purim. The מקור חיים writes it should be a Chashuva food, therefore he recommends "rice"  The בן איש חי פ' תצוה writes to eat legumes. The דברי יציב (Klausenburg Rebbe zt"l) writes "We have no such  Minhag of legumes (מאכל זרעונים) perhaps we don't eat it because it is a מאכל אבלים". He writes that we fulfill the מאכל זרעונים by eating cabbage. From the רמב"ם כלאים פ"א ה"ח it seems all vegetables (ירקות) are considered זרעונים The משנה ברורה writes to eat the זרעונים on  the  first night. The משנה ברורה (Shar Hatzion 695 sk 12) quotes the כל בו "Some do not to eat meat* on the first night of Purim not to confuse it with the Seudas Purim." The מערבית (Yotzros) for Purim in מחזור ויטרי** it says "Cursed is the man who raises his hands to drink water -who eats ground beans- who eats lentils [on Purim]"  * The Chasam Sofer writes, The Minhag is to eat veal on Purim & not beef . זכר לעגלה ערופה **It is a very strange מערבית called "ליל שיכורים" probably not to be taken seriously. (even though mentioned by a ראשון)

The unclear Kalir   The 'אבן עזרא קהלת ה criticizes the Piyutim of the קליר. He has four main complaints against them.  1) Most of them are חידות (riddles) & משלים (parables)  2) Instead of לשון הקדש, he mixes in לשון התלמוד 3) He invents words & uses improper דקדוק (poetic license) 4) They are based on מדרשות & אגדות instead of פשט The תשובת מהרשד"ם  (O..Ch 35) writes,  The Sephardic Paytonim  have a simpler language, and are more easily understood, whereas the Ashkenazi Paytonim use difficult words and even the ש"ץ doesn't understand what he is saying. The  מהרשד"ם  recommends switching to Nusach Sfard, (בני עדות המזרח) which he claims is a superior Nusach.   "אל תטוש תורת אמך  is not a problem because it's only applicable when there is a small איסור involved and not for changing a נוסח התפילה. The Chasam Sofer (Hagohos O.Ch.68) writes that the מהרשד"ם wasn't aware of the מגן אברהם  (68) who writes. "you are not allowed to change the נוסח התפילה because there are 12 gates in heaven, one for each שבט. Each one  has his own Minhag. The ירושלמי says they are all equal  you should not change from the Minhag of your fathers." Had the מהרשד"ם been aware of this M.A., he would nםt have written what he wrote. This coming Shabbos (Zachor) in the Piyut from קליר   אָץ- He rushed קוֹצֵץ בֶּן קוֹצֵץ - the clipper son of the clipper  (רשע בן רשע) קְצוּצַי לְקַצֵּץ - the clipped to clip (Bnei Yisroel -  the harmed to harm) בְּדִבּוּר מְפוֹצֵץ - with slander  רְצוּצַי לְרוֹצֵץ - the crushed to crush (Bnei Yisroel) לֵץ בְּבוֹאוֹ לְלוֹצֵץ - when the רשע came to do evil פֻּלַּץ וְנִתְלוֹצֵץ - the evil turned back against him כְּעָץ מְחַצְּצִים לְחַצֵּץ - for wanting to shoot arrows on Bnei Yisroel כְּנֵץ עַל יוֹנָה לְנַצֵּץ - and wanting to devour like a hawk the dove

The רמ"א writes to give 3 coins marked as half (half dollar- half Shekel etc) זכר למחצית השקל. The coinage should be of the local currency. Mori V'Rabi Harav Hagaon R. The סילוק  לפרשת שקלים* starts with "אז"- "then" when Hashem created the world ------------ראית,וספרתה,והכנת,וחקרת, ומדדת, ושקלת The קליר uses 39 different words describing how Hashem created the world. The גאון explains the 39 words represents the 39 מלאכות done by Hashem to create the word. So too are the 39 מלאכות at the construction of the משכן which the Midrash compares it to the creation of the world. The דעת תורה of Mori V'Rabi Harav Shlomo Miller Shlita is, that דעת תורה applies only to Halacha & Torah Hashkafah.

The medical advice of a גדול even from the
חזון איש is not דעת תורה and one is not obligated
to follow it.

Following the medical opinion of the חזון איש was advisable because of his vast medical knowledge and the special סייעתא דשמיא he had. ע"כ ממורי ורבי שליט"א

Similarly, listening to the advice of Rabbi Firrer Shlita would be advisable because of his medical knowledge and the special סייעתא דשמיא he has.

פדיון נפש, what is it?

 

Parshas Hashavua משפטים  (אם כפר יושת עליו ונתן פדין נפשו (שמות כ"א :ל    The 4 TYPES OF פדיון נפש 1) The original פדיון נפש mentioned in the Torah. If a שור מועד kills a person, the owner of the שור  has to pay כופר - פדיון נפש 2)The  פדיון נפש mentioned by the ראשונים, If someone ch"v  had a sick child or his children died during or shortly after childbirth. The father would  sell his child to another person. The reason for doing so was in case the גזירה was on the father to lose his children, he was no longer considered the father.  ( a similar concept we do today by adding a name.  3) The Kabbalistic Pidyon Nefesh (רמב"ן) mentioned in detail in Sefer "יוסף תהילות" (Chida) They take 160 silver coins (גמטרי' כסף = חסד)  count  17 of the coins and have כוונה for the שם אהוה. Then you count 26 have כוונה for the שם הויה. This procedure is done a few  more times with different כוונות at each count. Afterward, all the coins are mixed up again and  more special תפילות are said. The Chasam Sofer in his ספר הזכרון writes,  In the year 1809 when Napolean laid siege on Bratislava (Pressburg) He secretly arranged for the Rosh Hakahal R. Moishe Shreiber (same name as Chasam Sofer) to collect 541 ("גמטרי' ישראל) coins from the Pressburger Yidden. He then gathered a מנין of his Talmidim to secretly perform the פדיון נפש 4) The Chasidic פדיון נפש The Kvittel with the בקשה ( Refuah, Zivugim, Parnasa, etc.) The money given to the צדיק is called פדיון נפש.

Plagues-once in 60-70 years

 

בריך רחמנא שהחיינו וקימנו והיגיענו לזמן הזה           הרי אני בן שבעים שנה וזכיתי The ספר מקור חסד adds another reason of his own why to make a סעודה on the 70th birthday. We find in Yerushalmi that Hashem brings down a plague to the world once every 60-70 years to rid the world of ממזרים. When one celebrates his 70th birthday he must have survived the plague and a סעודת הודאה is in order.

Both מינים can have the same ברכה.   1) Two pieces of chicken one roasted and the other boiled etc. are considered 2 מינים   2) Two pieces of chicken, one the top and the other the bottom is considered 1 מין   3) Mixed vegetable salad is considered as 1 מין   4) Cut up vegetables to be mixed into a salad are considered 2 מינים   5) Sandwich (Hamburger, bun, lettuce & tomato, etc.) is considered 1 מין.
