Who was ר'
One of the most ingenious
innovations in צדקה
fundraising was to attach the name of ר' מאיר בעל הנס
to the Pushke and placing it in every
Jewish home.
It is unknown who came up with this
brilliant idea.
It is also unknown who this ר' מאיר בעל
הנס was.
Contrary to
the popular belief, it
is not the תנא ר' מאיר.
30) writes,
"The
Pushkes were named after an
who lived in ארץ הקדש a few
hundred years ago.
He was famous – and was called
According to the ירושלמי
(Kelaim 9:3), ר' מאיר the תנא
died in חוץ לארץ (Place called Asia) and his body was
placed in the sea in חו"ל.
One of the first sources that
mention R. Meir’s burial place
in E.Y. is in the Sefer
He writes that
R. Meir
(תנא) ended up being buried in the city of טבריה.
The סדר הדורות quotes
the same Sefer גלילות ארץ ישראל
who writes, "
R. Yitzchok from גוש חלב and
הנס are both buried in גוש חלב. The
גלילות ארץ ישראל continues that he doesn’t know who
the
two were.
Two of the most prominent and
respected Frum historians
(R. Yechiel Heilprin- סדר
R. Yaakov Lipschutz -
זכרון יעקב ) both believed,
and the Tanna R.Meir
were two different people.
