NOT THE DEAD לא המתים


Why, during ברכת ק"ש in the morning,
the ציבור pauses in mid-sentence
and waits for the ש"ץ  to say
(ומקדישים(ן) וממליכים(ן
and then they all start together את שם?


              לא המתים

The  טור או"ח ס"א enumerates all  places where one should
pause when saying two words next to each other
where the first word ends with a Mem מ and the second
word starts with an Alef א.
One of the places he mentions is וממליכים את שם

The reason to pause is so that it doesn't sound as מת
(וממליך מת - he crowns the dead) 

The Chasam Sofer in the Hagohos (O.Ch 59) writes,
"At וממליכים את שם it is especially important to pause
so it shouldn't sound like וממליך מת because there
are cults who worship the dead.
This is also the reason why we stop in mid-sentence
and wait for the Chazzan to start את שם"


The בני עדות המזרח (Sephardim) do not pause because
they say וממליכין with Noon נ and not with a Mem מ

Nusach  (ספרד (אריז"ל also say וממליכין with a Noon נ yet
they do pause because they originally said וממליכים 
with a Mem מ so the original Minhag  of pausing stayed on

2 solutions to the riddle


ראובן is obligated to honor his younger brother שמעון because of the Halacha
in שלחן ערוך (YD. 240:22) "A person is obligated to honor his older brother




According to the Ramban in Parshas וישלח 32:5 it seems, that
because עשיו sold his בכורה to יעקב, therefore, עשיו the older
brother would be required to honor his younger brother.

The Ramban writes that יעקב insisted that עשיו be addressed
as אדוני עשיו to show to עשיו as if the sale of the בכורה means
nothing to him and he still treats him as the בכור by honoring him.

יעקב addressing עשיו as אדוני is proof that יעקב does not
consider the sale  legitimate otherwise he wouldn't
call him אדוני עשיו.

In truth, יעקב did consider it as a 100% legitimate sale. He
wasn't Halachically required to honor עשיו but vice versa.

The Hilchos Ketanos (2 :174) writes,Twin boys born in a leap year 1) in Adar 1 and the other in Adar2, being the younger brother becomes a Gadol (Bar Mitzvah) before his older brother*, the older brother is מחוייב to honor his younger brother".

He was the one who taught us, how to support Mosdos Hatorah and the needy.

He was the one who taught us, to give away hundreds of millions to צדקה.

He was the one who taught us, donating צדקה may also be done without publicity & recognition. 

He was the one who taught us, giving to the נצרכים with humility & בדרך כבוד.

His צדקה benefited directly or indirectly almost every single Yid in the entire world.

The רמ"א או"ח תרצ"ה:ב writes, "Men should be sending

create a problem of ספק קידושין if it was sent to a
single woman [אלמנה]."

The ערוך השלחן adds an additional reason for not
sending משלוח מנות to the opposite gender because
by sending gifts to each other brings to
improper קירוב דעת (close relations)

Rav Y.S. Elyashiv & R.S.Z. Auerbach zt"l  both
hold that a man or a woman may send משלוח מנות to
a husband & wife or a family with both genders.

Harav Shmuel Chasid Mi Shapira* (Speyer) who
calculated according to the Sifri, that Rivka was
14 years old when she married Yitzchok.

Tosfos concludes that there are מדרשות חלוקים
because according to the סדר עולם she was
only 3 years old.


R. Shmuel Hachasid was one of the first
Chasidei Ashkenaz (Kabbalist) He was the
father of R Yehuda Hachasid and supposedly
wrote the first few Perakim of Sefer Chasidim.
He also was the author of the שיר היחוד

It should be corrected to
If there is no Niftar in the area, one may recite the Bracha up to 30 days after hearing of death (R M. Feinstein Zt"l) or up to 24 hours (other Poskim גשה"ח)

Why we make the Bracha?

Why should you make this Bracha for a woman
who wasn't Jewish, wasn't a Tzadekes and died
thousands of years ago.
The שער הציון answers that we are upset that
the תפילות of אברהם אבינו weren't accepted
Perhaps we can answer with a diffrent approach.

When there is ח"ו a death in a family, the ברכה of דיין האמת is recited to justify the מדת הדין of HKBH.

The ברכה should preferably be said in front of the Niftar (יציאת נשמה or לויה/קריעה)

If there is no Niftar in the area, one may recite the Bracha up to 30 days of Petirah (R M. Feinstein Zt"l) or up to 12 months (other Poskim)

The distruction  of Sdom and death of Lot's wife was מדת הדין of HKBH. A מדת הדין on a whole city even on Goyim
would require a Bracha.

Since this happened more than 12 months ago (3800 years)  the Bracha would not have been said.

However, the pillar of salt that can be seen today might be considered as if the actual body of Lot's wife is in front of the person looking at it.

Perhaps this is the reason why only in front of this pillar can one make a Bracha for the  מדת הדין of 3800 years ago
being it is as if the Niftar is in front of the person making the Bracha.

All other Niftarim are buried and gone and no Bracha can be said after so many years.

2) ברוך - זוכר הצדיקים" (For saving Lot)
(Shulchan Aruch O. Ch. 218:8)
 
 Bad news?
Why should you make this Bracha for a woman
who wasn't Jewish, wasn't a Tzadekes and died
thousands of years ago.

Why don't we say this Bracha in מערת המכפלה
or קבר רחל for the death of our mothers etc.?
