Story Told Over By Maran Harav Shach Zatzal

told the following story:

Reb Shach Voting in 1992

The Nesivos (ר' יעקב לורברבוים זצ"ל) suffered terribly in an unhappy marriage. He wished to divorce his wife, but she refused to accept a גט.

R. Akiva Eiger זצ״ל became involved and attempted to persuade her to accept the גט.

She responded: “My husband is such a great and holy man. I would never willingly accept a גט from such a great Tzaddik!”

Rav Shach זצ״ל commented: Even though she recognized her husband’s greatness and holiness, she nevertheless caused him צרות גדולות עד לשמים — terrible suffering that reached the heavens.

Rav Shach explained that we find a similar idea in the pasuk concerning Avraham Avinu:

"... וְנִבְרְכוּ בְךָ כֹּל מִשְׁפְּחֹת הָאֲדָמָה ... וּמְקַלֶּלְךָ אָאֹר"

All the nations of the world will recognize the greatness of אברהם אבינו and, by extension, כלל ישראל. Nevertheless, there will still be those who curse him and seek to harm his descendants.

The Ramban Changed His Mind

Yahrzeit of Hagaon Hachasid R. Yidel Donath, his wife and all his eight children H.Y.D.., murdered by the Nazis

Reb Yeedle Donath was the last Rosh Yeshiva of The Yeshiva Haramah (Pressburg)

founded by the Chasam Sofer zt"l (Took over from the Cheshev Sofer zt"l)

AVU LIGT DEH
MAMME ROCHEL?

The Ramban in Parshas Vaychi (48-7) writes that

Rochel died and was buried in Romoh which is in the chelek of Binyomin.

The Ramban in Parshas Vayishlach (35:16) writes that after he arrived in Eretz Yisrael and saw with his own eyes Kever Rochel,

he changed his mind

and held that Kever Rochel is less than a mil away from Bais Lechem (chelek Yehudah & not in Romoh).

It would be interesting to know what exactly the Ramban saw that made him change his mind.

What convinced him to realize this to be the true location of Kever Rochel?

Reb Binyamin (from) Todelo traveled to Yerushalayim in the year 1170

one hundred years before the Ramban's arrival to Eretz Yisrael

He wrote in his travel diary a short description of Kever Rochel.

"The matzeiva has 11 stones

Over the matzeivah there is a dome built on four posts.

Yidden who come there write their names on the stones of the matzeiva."

(grafitti) They used to do this also on the Kosel.

Chasam Sofer On This Weeks Parsha

Parshas Hashavua

The Chasam Sofer Al Hatorah (Parshas ויחי P 245) quotes the Kuzari who says that לעתיד לבא (in the near future) מצרים will be part of ארץ ישראל.

At the ברית בין הבתרים, Hashem promised the land to Avraham Avinu extending the border all the way to נהר מצרים

(Breishis 15-18)

The Ibn Ezra, Rashi & others agree with the Targum.

The border of Eretz Yisroel will extend

all the way to the Nile (Cairo)

The Radvaz and other Rishonim argue and claim נהר מצרים can't be the Nile.

(They seem to hold נהר מצרים is possibly The Wadi El Arish)

Parshas Lech Lecha- Bless Me

The מדרש writes, that when אברהם אבינו was about

to perform the ברית on himself he was somewhat hesitant,

so Hashem held on to him.

Hence וכרת עמו הברית, (together with him), and this is also

one of the sources of having a סנדק holding the baby at a ברית.

---

The Steipler Zt"l was questioned regarding the מנהג requesting a

ברכה from the סנדק

Where is the מקור for this מנהג?

He responded that he was unaware of any מקור for this מנהג.

---

Perhaps the מקור for asking a ברכה from the סנדק is from a בפירושע תניא .

-R Yishmael ben Elisha said that he once entered לפני ולפנים to be מקטיר קטורת and HKBH asked him for a ברכה

---

We see that the ברכה of a מקטיר קטורת

is so valuable & powerful that even HKBH כביכול desired

a ברכה from him.

סנדקאות is compared to a הקטרת קטורת and therefore the Sandek's

ברכה is also considered valuable and worth pursuing.

Why the Arabs behave this way?

Why the Arabs behave this way?

The רמב"ן writes that because שרה אמנו afflicted and mistreated הגר, and אברהם אבינו did not intervene to prevent it, the בני ישראל would suffer at the hands of ישמעאל throughout the generations, even to this day.

A powerful lesson can be derived from the Ramban’s words. If mistreating הגר, a non-Jewish woman, was the cause of such severe consequences that כלל ישראל would suffer at the hands of ישמעאל for thousands of years, how much more serious must it be to be מצער fellow Yidden—even those who are not Shomrei Torah Umitzvos!

Consider the repeated illegal riots (הפגנות בלע"ז) that take place numerous times a week, causing distress and disruption to thousands of Yidden, both Shomrei Torah Umitzvos and those who are not. How can such behavior be justified by declaring the struggle a מלחמת עמלק, as though that designation permits causing harm and suffering to thousands of other Yidden in the process?

Even more troubling is the failure of those who have the influence and authority to teach and publicize that לא זו הדרך — this is not the Torah’s way. Declaring fellow Yidden to be Amalekim, and using that label to justify throwing rocks at them or calling them “Nazim,” is fundamentally wrong. Such rhetoric creates an atmosphere in which the same hatred and violence leads to be directed at Rabbonim and Manhigim who do not share one’s views.

Perhaps the turmoil and danger facing the frum population in Eretz Yisroel today should prompt us to engage in serious חשבון הנפש. Rather than placing all the blame on the secular Zionists—(they are merely the stick HKB״H uses to guide us) —we must also examine our own conduct. Are we doing enough to eliminate the practice of being מצער Yidden?

It is impossible that fighting for Yiddishkeit would require us to behave like our suicide Jihadist cousins screaming -----נמות ולא or to be מזיק ומשחית engaging in destructive riots and intimidation like Mr. Schwartz’s family in Harlem.
