Interesting Hanhogos and Pesakim for Rosh Hashana from the Chasam Sofer

1.   There is no chiyuv to go to the Mikvah on Erev Rosh Hashana. The only time there is a Chiyuv (Tahara)  is on Erev Sholosh Regolim

2.   Hataras Nedarim he made on Erev Yom Kippur and not on Erev Rosh Hashana

3.   He insisted the Chazan say  נקדש, - נעריצך at the end of the Piyut  דרי מעלה עם דרי מטה otherwise you miss out the Mitzvah Deorysa of ונקדשתי  . To be Mekayam the Mitzvah, the Chazzan needs to invite, to be Mekadesh Hashem.

4.   For Tashlich all he said were 3x the Pasuk Mi Keil      Kamocho and no other Tefilos.

5   He was Makpid not to eat nuts only on Rosh Hashana and  not on the rest of Aseres Yemei Teshuva

Ever Wonder Why יהיו לרצון Is Said Quietly?

יהיו לרצון אמרי פי

The Rema (O.Ch. 123:6) writes:

The Chazan at the end of חזרת הש"ץ

does not say. יהיו לרצון אמרי פי

The Mishna V'rurah says the reason

is because he relies on the תתקבל

of the Kaddish, he will be saying 

after ובא לציון.(not to be repetitive) 

The משנה ברורה also quotes the של"ה and

the גאון who argue and hold he should

say it.

The Minhag is to say it quietly, not to

offend the Psak of the Rema.

*Possibly the same reasoning would

apply during Selichos at שמע קולינו.

Since the Chazzan ends the Selichos

with the Kaddish w תתקבל. It would 

sound repetitive saying both יהו לרצון

& תתקבל, therefore, they instituted to 

say יהיו לרצון quietly.

The Gemoro asks why were  infants brought to the Mitzvah  

of Hakhel. The Gemoro answers, to reward the

 the ones who brought them. (the parents)

From this Gemoro it seems, there is no benefit for infants,

to be brought to the Bais Hamidrash just to listen to the  learning. 

Otherwise, the simple answer  should have been they came 

to listen so to have the Torah  absorbed in them.

How do we explain Chazal ( Yerushalmi Yevamos 8b) The mother of 

R. Yehoshua brought him in his crib  (infant) into the Bais Haknesess 

so his ears will be attached to Torah.

Mori V’rabi Harav Hagaon Reb Shlomo Miller Shlita said :

The Gemoro

holds, there is  no benefit for a child who doesn’t understand,

to listen to Torah learning.. Torah doesn’t get absorbed just by listening,

without understanding it.

That is the reason of the Gemoro  asks why bother bringing infants.

The Gemoro answers, Hashem rewards parents who believe it will benefit 

the child and therefore brings the child to the Bais Hamedrash,. 

The reward is they do benefit and become Talmidei Chachamim.

The Torah does gets absorbed in them.This is the reward שכר למביאיהן

Since the Segulah only works as a reward, for the effort to bring the child to listen and absorb Torah

If the child was brought to Shul  not for that purpose but for other reasons such as to give  the mother a break so she could have a rest etc,,  this child will not benefit listening to Torah being learnt.

in the Bais Hamedrash since he doesn't understand and the parents

will not be rewarded for bringing them.

A Yid who gives his life to save other Yidden attains the highest level of קדושה. Chazal declare (Bava Basra 10b):

אין כל בריה יכולה לעמוד במחיצתן

No creature can stand within the מחיצה of those who sacrifice themselves for כלל ישראל.

Many struggle to understand how someone who was not a שומר תורה ומצוות — even was עובר על כל התורה כולה — can suddenly become a קדוש the moment he is killed על קידוש השם

The גמרא (קידושין מ״ט) teaches:

If a רשע גמור is מקדש a woman on condition that he is a צדיק, she is מקודשת — שמא הרהר תשובה בדעתו. Perhaps he had a moment of genuine תשובה.

From here we see that a רשע גמור can be transformed into a צדיק in an instant.

רש״י (תהלים ע״ט) writes:

בשר חסידיך – משקבלו פורענותם הרי הם חסידים

Once they receive their suffering, they are considered חסידים.

Even Yidden who were not observant — if goyim killed them — are elevated to the level of חסידים.

The רמב״ם הל׳ תשובה פ״ז ה״ד writes that a בעל תשובה should never imagine he is distant from the level of the צדיקים because of his past עבירות. Rather:

• He is beloved and cherished before Hashem
• As if he never sinned
• And his reward is greater, for he tasted sin, separated from it, and conquered his יצר.

If this is true for ordinary teshuvah, קל וחומר for one who gives his life for כלל ישראל.

It was deeply moving to stand at the graves of young sixteen-year-old boys who escaped Nazi Europe, reached Eretz Yisrael, and ended up being מוסר נפש to protect Yidden. These youths — barely adults — rose to the highest level of קדושה.

In עולם האמת, we will never reach their מחיצה. But in this world, we can still stand within their ד׳ אמות, recite a קפיטל תהלים, לטובת נשמתם הקדושים.
