The חיי אדם כלל א' סעיף ה' writes that אמונה shouldn't and doesn't come from observing מופתים which is usually שקר.
According to the חיי אדם, it is self-mindfulness and מסורה that draws a person closer to אמונה.
Reb Yaakov Kamenetsky ZT"L writes that the חיי אדם who was a מחותן and also close to the גאון was a staunch מתנגד and that influenced him re מופתים.
Reb Yaakov argues and claims that מופתים does have a positive effect on אמונה as we see it happened in the times of אלישע.
