The Niggun with R. Elyashiv's Hechsher

The Niggun מה אהבתי carries            a הכשר from Rav Elyashiv zt"l             Many don’t realize there’s a real issue with singing פסוקים as songs — The גמרא and שלחן ערוך (O.Ch. 560) say “התורה חוגרת שק- עשאוני בניך כמין זמר..” The Torah ‘puts on sackcloth’ when its words are turned into mere songs Because of this, earlier generations often used Yiddish niggunim, Maamarei Chazal, or wordless tunes for הקפות של שמחת תורה. Rav Isser Zalman Meltzer zt"l related that in Volozhin, the הקפות niggunim were “קמץ א' אה” and “אמר אביי” Rav Moshe Feinstein zt"l writes he knew of no solid היתר for singing פסוקים. Rav Elyashiv zt"l, however, allowed it only when the niggun brings out the meaning of the words and is sung as praise of Hashem. His example of a permitted niggun: “מה אהבתי תורתך.”  The Niggun Teitches up the meaning of the words.
