There is no Halachik reason to step back 3 steps before starting the שמונה עשרה or stepping forward 3 steps at the end of שמונה עשרה. It is done for practical reason to end up at your original spot. Artscroll Siddurim are probably incorrect by instructing to step forward 3 steps beforeחזרת   הש"ץ/קדושה Stepping  forward  (at end of the שמונה עשרה ) is optional.
