The Semicha Controversy

While the 诪讛专"讬 讘讬专讘 was Rav and Rosh Yeshiva in Tzfat,
the (诪讛专诇讘"讞 (诇讜讬 讘谉 讬注拽讘 谉 讞讘讬讘 was the Rov in Yerushalayim
which was a much smaller community than Tzfat. Most
of the Gedolim at that time lived in Tzfat.

The 住诪讬讻讛 that R.Y.B. introduced was based on the
Rambam in 驻讬专讜砖 讛诪砖谞讬讜转 on the 1st Mishna in Sanhedrin
and in the Yad Hl. Sanhedrin) who writes if 讻诇 讞讻诪讬 讗"讬
are 诪住讻讬诐 then we can reintroduce the 住诪讬讻讛.

R.Y.B. didn't bother consulting with the 讞讻诪讬 讬专讜砖诇讬诐
He held since 专讜讘 讞讻诪讬 讗"讬 were living in Tzfat and
when the Rambam writes  讻诇 讞讻诪讬 讗"讬 he meant 专讜讘 is
good enough.

R.L.B.Ch. was upset that the 讞讻诪讬 讬专讜砖诇讬诐 were not
consulted and their 讻讘讜讚 wasn't taken into consideration.

He also held since the Rambam writes  讻诇 讞讻诪讬 讗"讬
then 专讜讘 is not enough.

The 诪讛专"讬 讘讬专讘 was 诪住诪讬讱 the 诪讛专诇讘"讞 hoping that
this will end the 诪讞诇讜拽转. The 诪讛专"讬 讘讬专讘 wasn't successful
and the 诪讞诇讜拽讛 kept on until after his death.

In the last( 住讬诪谉 (拽诪讝 in 砖讜"转 诪讛专诇讘"讞 it is printed a
5 part 拽讜谞讚专住* from both the 诪讛专"讬 讘讬专讘 & 诪讛专诇讘"讞
arguing about the legitimacy and merits of the 住诪讬讻讛
They ended up attacking each other personally.

The Machlokes was so intense that the 诪讛专"讬 讘讬专讘
had to flee Eretz Yisroel to Damascus. The
authorities were told that he plans to revolt against the
Government with the introduction of the 住诪讬讻讛

The 住诪讬讻讛 lasted  for only 4 generations The 诪讛专"讬 讘讬专讘
was 诪住诪讬讱 the Bais Yosef who was 诪住诪讬讱  R.Moishe
Alshich who was 诪住诪讬讱 R.Chaim Vital who was the
last 诪讜住诪讱 in the world.

    HISTORY NOTE:

According to the Wikipedia internet encyclopedia,
these lands were conquered by the Rashidun Caliphs,
from year 632 to year 661 of the Common Era
(from west to East): Libya, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon,
Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Eastern Turkey, and Iran.

Therefore, Winston Churchill was correct when
he said that the Muslims were the outsiders
and conquerors, with respect to the land of Israel.
