SEVEN REASONS

PARSHAS HASHAVUA - TOLDOS                                                            מחלת בת ישמעאל וכי מחלת שמה-- מכאן לחתן שמוחלין לו עונותיו ירושלמי בכורים פ"ג ה"ג    Seven reasons, כלה & חתן fast on the day of חופה     1) Their sins are forgiven (ירושלמי ביכורים ג:ג) 2)  To ensure they are not intoxicated during Kiddushin (מהר"ם מינץ) 3)  Following the practice of the early Chassidim who fast before               performing a mitzvah(רוקח שנ"ג)   4)   To nullify the decree of תיגרא (strife) in the כתובה        ( מהר"י ברונא צ"ג)   5)  Because a חתן—like a king—is judged on the day of hisחופה       (מהר"י ברונא צ"ג) 6)  The חופה parallels מתן תורה when the בני ישראל fasted        (תשב"ץ קטן תס"ה) 7)  To avoid having a שמחה שלימה (a completely unrestrained joy)      (רבינו אפרים מבון)   הלכה ולא למעשה   Rav Dovid Soloveitchik zt"l said in the name of the Brisker Dayan, Rav Simcha Zelig Rieger zt"l: "חז"ל said: 'חתן ביום חופתו מוחלין לו עונותי'—this applies only on the actual day of the חופה" Therefore, if the חופה is held at night, the "day of the חופה" is considered the next day. According to this, there would be no need to fast, since the fasting relates only to that same day. It seems he accepted only the first reason—the day of forgiveness —as the primary basis for fasting. אמבצי
