דם עצמו רש"י (suicide)
In Shulchan Aruch (Y.D. 345) there are many Halachos
on how to treat suicide victims.
(אין מתעסקים עמו -ואין מתאבלין- ואין מספידין אותו ולא קורעין ולא חולצי-)
(No Taharah, no Shivah, no Hesped, no tearing garment,
etc.)
Today, according to most פוסקים,
we treat suicide victims like a regular death.
This leniency is based on a
controversial Sefer שו"ת בשמים ראש.*
The בשמים ראש claims if someone had problems or hardships in
life (who
doesn't?) then we don’t treat it as a מאבד עצמו לדעת.
(The Halacha of מאבד עצמו לדעת gets thrown out the window.)
The חתם סופר (Shu”t Y.D.326)
and many other Gedolim consider this Sefer forged by R. Shaul Berlin, known as
a Maskil, who claimed to supposedly have found these manuscripts from the רא"ש.
The חת"ס
termed the Sefer "כזבי הרא"ש"
(Fake Rosh)
The אבני נזר writes, not to keep this Sefer in your
home. It
should be burned even on יום כיפור שחל בשבת
*We consider every
suicide as having a mental disorder
