(תוספות (תענית כ"ט ע"ב quotes the יש מפרשים that יעקב
smelled like an אתרוג.

The מהרש"א attempts to explain, that since the fruit of
the עץ הדעת was an אתרוג, (according to one שיטה)  perhaps
that was also the same smell of גן עדן that יצחק
smelled on יעקב.

Perhaps, this is the reason the  גמרא כתובות ס"א says 
A mother who eats Esrog will have pleasant
smelling children. The smell of גן עדן/אתרוג.

The אבן עזרא -רות ג:ג writes

וסכת. שמן שיש לו ריח טוב כי כן מנהג גדולי ישראל אנשים ונשים.

The Minhag of Gedolei Yisrael both male & female
is to wear nice-smelling perfumes.

Perhaps, they had Esrog perfume and wanted to
smell like גן עדן
