According To Mori V'Rabi

The רמ"א writes to give 3 coins marked as half (half dollar- half Shekel etc) זכר למחצית השקל. The coinage should be of the local currency.

Mori V'Rabi Harav Hagaon R. Shlomo Miller Shlita holds, If there are no half coins in the local currency (Canada no half dollar) it is preferable to give at least the value* of one מחצית השקל in the local currency זכר למחצית השקל.

*מחצית השקל = quarter oz. silver
At $28.00 per oz = $7.00 USD .
