Which oil may be used to light Shabbos candles but not Chanukah candles?

בהעלתך את הנרות
Which oil may be used to light Shabbos candles but not Chanukah candles?

Oil from שמיטה may not be burnt unless you benefit from it while it is burning.

You may benefit from the light of Shabbos candles, therefore, Shmitta oil is O.K.

You may not benefit from Chanukah candles, therefore Shemitta oil is not OK.

  1. Jeremiah, chapter 17, verse 4, teaches the importance of the year-of-release, which is called the Sabbatical Year in English, or shmittah year in Hebrew.

This means Jewish farmers who live in the land of Israel must allow their farm-lands to rest every 7th year.

    NOTE:
Rashi’s commentary on this verse makes this clearer.

The famous Bible verse: “Baruch HaGever Asher Yibtach BaHaShem…” actually refers to the shmittah year, in its original Biblical context.
