Berl went to a wedding and because the singer in the band
sang a song Berl's life was saved and he wasn't killed.
The Mishna Verurah (Hilchos Chanukah 670:8) writes, If a בת תלמיד חכם marries an עם הארץ
the Seudah is a סעודת רשות
unless they sing there זמירות ותשבחות which turns it into
a סעודת מצוה.
A בן סורר ומורה is only חייב מיתה
if he ate and drank at a סעודת רשות. If he ate at a
סעודת מצוה he is not חייב מיתה.
