The רמב"ן writes that because שרה אמנו afflicted and mistreated הגר, and אברהם אבינו did not intervene to prevent it, the בני ישראל would suffer at the hands of ישמעאל throughout the generations, even to this day.

A powerful lesson can be derived from the Ramban’s words. If mistreating הגר, a non-Jewish woman, was the cause of such severe consequences that כלל ישראל would suffer at the hands of ישמעאל for thousands of years, how much more serious must it be to be מצער fellow Yidden—even those who are not Shomrei Torah Umitzvos!

Consider the repeated illegal riots (הפגנות בלע"ז) that take place numerous times a week, causing distress and disruption to thousands of Yidden, both Shomrei Torah Umitzvos and those who are not. How can such behavior be justified by declaring the struggle a מלחמת עמלק, as though that designation permits causing harm and suffering to thousands of other Yidden in the process?

Even more troubling is the failure of those who have the influence and authority to teach and publicize that לא זו הדרך — this is not the Torah’s way. Declaring fellow Yidden to be Amalekim, and using that label to justify throwing rocks at them or calling them “Nazim,” is fundamentally wrong. Such rhetoric creates an atmosphere in which the same hatred and violence leads to be directed at Rabbonim and Manhigim who do not share one’s views. (האדמו"ר מקרלין שליט"א)

Perhaps the turmoil and danger facing the frum population in Eretz Yisroel today should prompt us to engage in serious חשבון הנפש. Rather than placing all the blame on the secular Zionists—(they are merely the stick HKB״H uses to guide us) —we must also examine our own conduct. Are we doing enough to eliminate the practice of being מצער Yidden?

דרכיה דרכי נועם. It is impossible that fighting for Yiddishkeit would require us to behave like our suicide Jihadist cousins screaming -----נמות ולא or to be מזיק ומשחית engaging in destructive riots and intimidation like Mr. Schwartz’s family in Harlem.
