אונקלוס פ' תצוה,רש"י and the רמב"ם translate, "בתוכם"
” in between”.
The פעמונים were placed between the רימונים.
אונקלוס פ' פקודי and the רמב"ן, translate בתוכם
“inside.”
The פעמונים were placed inside the רימונים.
Since there were equal amounts of פעמונים as רימונים,
so why according to Rashi etc, does the Torah write to
place the פעמונים between the רימונים and not the other
way, the רימונים between the פעמונים?
R. Yosef Dov (Berel) Soloveitchik zt”l (Yerushalayim)
answered :
The רמב"ם (Klei Hamikdash 9:4) writes, first, to attach all
the רימונים and afterward, we place the פעמונים.
The Rambam seems to be saying the Torah commanded us to
attach the רימונים on, first, and only then do we attach the פעמונים.
The Rambam gets this Halacha that the רימונים should be attached
first, since the Torah writes the פעמונים to be placed between the
רימונים and not the opposite.
The פירוש הר המוריה (Friedberg Rambam) answers,
Being the רימונים were made from 3 colors of wool, and
the פעמונים were made from a single color (gold)
The רימונים seemed to be more noticeable and prominent over
the single color פעמונים. Therefore it appeared to the eye
that the פעמונים were between the רימונים and not the רימונים
between the פעמונים.
