Why Confess

 

There is a מצות עשה דאורייתא על וידוי מעשרות What was done wrong that he needs to say וידוי?                             1) Because our forefathers sinned we must remove the מעשרות from the house instead of giving it to the בכורות of our own family.   2)  For withholding the מעשרות and not distributing them immediately.   3) וידוי can be said even for good deeds and not only for bad deeds.   4) The קדושת לוי writes, one should always keep remembering the עבירות of the past and one should forget his מצוות of the past.   That's the Pshat of אתה זוכר כל הנשכחות, Hashem remembers the forgotten מצוות or ח"ו the forgotten עבירות (if one doesn't remember them himself)   The Satmar Rebbe R. Yoilish zt"l explained with this קדושת לוי  the reason for the need for  וידוי מעשרות, since he says "לא עברתי ממצותיך ולא שכחתי"     (מעשר שני פ"ה משנה י') 1)  תוס' יו"ט - ספורנו   2)  משנה ראשונה  3)  תוס' אנשי שם
