The custom of not eating Gebrokts on Pesach was:
ReplyDeletenever practiced in Tanach times,
never practiced by the Rabbis of the Mishnah,
never practiced by the Rabbis of the Jerusalem Talmud,
never practiced by the Rabbis of the Babylonian Talmud,
never practiced by the Gaonim,
never practiced by the any of the Rishonim.
It was started by the Baal Shem Tov
[or his followers] to refute accusations
that Chassidim were not careful with mitzvot.
The true purpose behind not eating Gebrokts
is to prove that the followers of the Baal Shem Tov
are careful with mitzvoth; it has nothing to do with
chametz, and everything to do with Frum politics.
