According to Rashi,
A child, even if he has reached the age of Chinuch is Potur
from Mitzvas Krias Shema.
The child usually sleeps in
the morning and in the evening the father is
not at home.

One of our readers submitted the following story about Reb Yaakov Kamentski :
I
heard the following story from Rabbi Paretzky:
Rabbi
Paretzky was walking up 14th Ave one night at approximately
11:30 PM
Another
Person was walking towards him in the other direction holding the hand of his
child.
As
they were converging on the entrance to the Agudah shul on 14th Ave. R’ Yaakov
Kamenetzky came out and they all met.
After
the Shalom Aleichem’s R’ Yaakov asked the Yid what the child was doing up at
this hour
He
replied that they had a family Simcha and the boy had a nap in the afternoon
To
which R’ Yaakov responded:
The
reason there no chinuch on the mitzvah of Kriyas Shema – because children are
supposed to be asleep at that time.
Why
did the Chachamim not have the parents put the children to sleep in the
afternoon so that the child can stay up to lein Kriyas Shema
With
that he said good night and left.
